UPDATE: Miles to stay

Hell, even EDSBS already knew about this, but I'll post anyway: the Times Pic is reporting that Miles is staying at LSU. Keep your eyes and ears alert at 1:50 ET, as LSU will host a press conference with all the juicy details.

If Miles is indeed staying, color me shocked. Shocked isn't a color, but whatever the implied color is for shocked, color me that.

ESPNews confirming it now
They mentioned that they've got "conflicting reports" out of this story, but that the updated one is Miles' staying. They're on the phone with a Michigan beat writer for the Detroit News, Angelique Chengelis.

We'll find out in fifteen minutes the details of the package we gave Les...clearly it must have been quite lucrative for him to turn down his alma mater.

Good points being made on WWL right now
On how huge it is for LSU to keep Miles. Say what you will about coaching mishaps (and we have, along with most everyone else), but his staying will unquestionably big for recruiting. If he turns down his ALMA MATER to stay at LSU, how confident will recruits be that he'll stay all the way through with them?

Just watched the press conference on ESPN News...hah! Nothing about any sort of contract extension. "I am the coach at LSU. I will be the coach." Didn't deny anything...but IF he were to bolt LSU after today it's a bit absurd that after all the diplomacy he'd suddenly take the Saban route. Perhaps the LSU administration forced him to make that statement on the day of the game, as it's still that important for us?

I was kind of looking forward
to Les leaving. After the shit he's put this team through in the last 2 weeks--a team that had as good a chance to win a NC as any--the shine is gone. He's basically leveraged this season against future job security. And he'll probably be fired within 5 seasons anyway. Let Michigan have him.

I'm glad he's staying
Sure, you get the occasionally questionable clock management and timeout decisions, but the man's an awesome recruiter, a gutsy playcaller, and a hell of a motivator.  His kids would obviously run through walls for him.  And he also manages to hire great coordinators and assistants.

I wasn't sold on him until the Florida game, but I really got in his corner after that.  And I think the game plan he and Crowton used with Perriloux today was masterful.

I'll just add
That while I'm generally pretty disappointed with our maddening inconsistency and underachieving (put teams AWAY for god's sake), I will say that:
  1. I have a helluva lot of respect for Miles' ethics. He's shown he will bench important guys if they break the rules, and I'm willing to give him time to improve as a coach.
  2. Regardless of his flubs here and there, a three year record of 33-6, 2 SEC West titles, an outright SEC Title, dominating bowl wins over two top 10 teams by a combined score of 81-17, and some damn big wins over ranked teams (take your pick of Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Va Tech, Arkansas, Tennessee 2x) over the last three years all tell me that we could do a lot worse than having him lead us.
