The Cotton Bowl usually pits a Big 12 team vs. a Southeastern Conference team. But the Cotton Bowl can select Notre Dame over an SEC team once in the next two years.
And apparently, they just might bypass the SEC this year, which could be bad news for LSU,

I don’t mind it … I think any Big 12 offense would fuck us up. I’d rather take our chances against the ACC in the Peach Bowl.
