A New Tradition

I like this

Junior tight end Richard Dickson said the fact that he’s switched to No. 18 this season is part of a new tradition among the Tigers.

Dickson said former LSU running back Jacob Hester, who wore No. 18 last year, asked Dickson to make the switch this year from the No. 82 he wore last season.

Turns out, former LSU quarterback Matt Mauck bequeathed the number to Hester when Jacob became a Tiger.

"Hopefully it’ll become a tradition," said Dickson, who said he doesn’t have his eye on any potential No. 18s out there. "Hopefully I can fill Jacob’s shoes."

Anytime players take it on themselves to create a tradition or do something to instill pride in the program, it is a major plus. I hope Dickson has a fantastic year and lives up to the leadership that both Mauck and Hester provided. I hope he then passes on the No. 18 to someone else, someone who will feel like he isn't playing just for himself anymore, but also for the guys who set the bar before him and the letters on his helmet. The number itself becomes something the players refuse to let down, and in turn, they lead their teammates down the same path.

Kudos Matt, Jacob and Richard.

Is it OK to hope

that’s it’s not a “white guy” tradition?

I was kinda thinking that

But it’s only an N of three, and it seems like LSU has more white players than most other programs, and if that’s true it’s more likely to happen here.

Speaking of white players...

I guess we’re average for the SEC, but I’d bet the SEC as a whole has way less white players than other conferences.

I have a buddy here that is from the U of Wisconsin. We were lauging last year when LSU lined up in a set where the only discernable white player on the field was the RB, Hester. Then when we watched the wisconsin game, UW lined up in a set where the only discernable black player on the field was their RB, PJ Hill. Funny.

As for the tradition, I think it’s really cool. Maybe Shep will be a future bearer of “The Jersey”, thereby easing Pittman’s fear of the whitey :)

#44

Syracuse does the same thing with Jim Brown’s #44. And I’d love to see #18 become a special jersey. Mauck and Hester are two of my all-time favorite Tigers.

It would be cool

I could definitely dig it. Just don’t let it be a white guy thing. That would be embarrassing.
