The University of Memphis will introduce LSU assistant head coach Larry Porter as its new head coach at an on-campus news conference this afternoon, according to the Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial Appeal.
2theadvocate.com | LSU Sports | Report: Porter to become Memphis head coach — Baton Rouge, LA. I understand Larry Porter wanting to move up to take a head coaching job, but that is just about the worst program in the country. Poor facilities, difficult recruiting base with at least 3 SEC programs going into the area all the time, a lack of focus on football throughout the program, and a low salary characterize this particular job. After their previous coach was fired, he suggested eliminating the football program at Memphis.
On the other hand, Larry Porter is arguably our most important assistant coach. He is our ace recruiter, and is the coach largely responsible for the fact that our running backs almost never fumbled. While a wholesale overhaul of the offensive staff appears to be in the offing, Porter was the one coach I would REALLY have liked to have kept.
Congratulations to him, however, on the big job. Good luck at it, and if he has any success it will really propel him to the upper echelons of the coaching ranks.

Miles Assistants
Are hot commodities, I wonder why that is?
You would think other programs like Texas, FSU, Nebraska, Memphis and McNeese where Miles’ assistants have been hired as HCs (or HC in waiting) would be worried about hiring guys that have learned under such a poor, stupid, incompetent coach like Les Miles….
Or maybe it’s JUST our fans that think that about Miles, perhaps the outside world looks at the results – what are they thinking?
On another (non sarcastic note) I was actually hoping that Miles would promote Porter IF Crowton is gone.
Oh well, I’ve no doubt that Les will make a good hire, he normally does.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
Porter is getting the Memphis job for a few reasons
1) He is a Memphis alum
2) He is a good recruiter
3) They don’t have to pay him much (the speculation about Charlie Strong and other big-name assistants was bogus; those guys would NEVER have taken the Memphis job).
Also, I don’t think any former Miles assistants are at Texas or McNeese. Peveto is at Northwestern St. The coach-in-waiting at Texas is Muschamp, who never coached with Miles.

OK Northwestern
So it’s all in spite of Miles again…..?
And didn’t Will stay on one year with Miles?
Anyway, doesn’t change my point – Mile is well respected outside of our program and we are the ones jaded, not them!
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
Muschamp left with Saban and ended up with him in Miami
Miles hired Pelini. And you’re putting words in my mouth. I never said “it” is all in spite of Miles. I’m just saying that Porter is getting the job at Memphis because he’s a Memphis alum and comes cheap. He has ability, but if he was a hot coaching commodity he would have ended up somewhere else. Heck, I think a solid D-II school would probably be a better job than Memphis at this point.

Goo luck to him..
Seriously he is going to need it going the Memphis. I wish we could have kept him. He is/was an integral part to this coaching staff.
At the end of the day
Gentlemen
I’m not going to take the time to go back over each comment but I like how I’m being skewered here for supporting Miles. I haven’t put words in any ones mouth, I’m not typing just to hear myself talk and I’m not some troll.
I have LOVED LSU and LSU football since before I was old enough to know what it was (despite my father trying to raise me as a Rebel since he played at Ole Piss) and as I have expressed, it is my personal view that all the hatred that has been heaped on Les Miles, including the calls for his head, are not just wrong and unfounded but more importantly are unhealthy and could be catastrophic for our program.
I’m not saying he is beyond criticism, nor am I saying he doesn’t deserve some but he also deserves for both sides to be heard, including his astonishingly good record over the course of his tenure and i for one am willing to lay it out there.
If that makes you uncomfortable, sorry but I have not attacked anyone and I’m not going anywhere.
If you want to ban me fine, otherwise I’m proud to be one of the few voices of support for our (insert d word) fine football coach!
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
There's something wonderfully apt about your complete unwillingness to use the reply function
People, please. We're all frightened and horny, but we can't let some killer dolphins keep us from living and scoring

I have been following THIS blog
for well over two years and have been commenting for about six months.
I don’t really follow any other blog although I must admit I have responded to a few of them recently but ATVS is where I come to discuss LSU football in an open forum.
Am I not welcome if I don’t hate our coach?
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
You're most certainly welcome here
But what a number of us on here are trying to do (clearly to little avail) is trying to get you to understand that valid and levelheaded criticism of a coaching staff is perfectly acceptable.
You’ve still yet to explain why you think a 5-SEC-loss season followed by a 3-SEC-loss season combined with one of the single most embarrassing stretches of football (vs Ole Miss) in recent NCAA history isn’t worthy of anything more than a little cringe. It raises a helluva lot of serious questions, as does the putrid numbers we’ve put up so far this year on offense.
Once again, Les isn’t getting paid that money to eke out squeakers vs the La Techs and Troys of the world.

Just chill out..
no one is banning you here. We’re just getting a little tired of the every-topic-of-discussion-is-an-excuse-to-defend-Miles-and-at-the-same-time-attack-those-with-differing-opinions-even-if-those-opinions-are-not-really-all-that-different act. You’re tilting at windmills here. No one here has actually outright called for him to be fired, though he has come in for a lot of criticism lately, and no one here has even mentioned banning you. This website gives people the authority to express differing opinions.
I will say, CFB’s relentless negativity towards Miles and your relentless defense of him and negativity towards his detractors are both tiresome, and they are just flip sides of the same coin. You like Miles. You think he’s had a lot of success here. You think people aren’t giving him enough credit for his accomplishments. Fine. Your point is made. Everyone knows what you think. Repeating it again and again in different words against different critics is not going to persuade anyone, especially when you mischaracterize what those people are saying.

I agree with Richard and GeauxTigers
I tend to lean a little towards the optimistic side of things, but you are starting to wear a little even on me with your repetitiveness. Everyone knows what you think, yet every article turns into a debate over Miles. It’s good that you’re optimistic and loyal, but bringing it up constantly almost does more harm than good.
2 other things: PLEASE use the reply button. It’s not hard, it’s the word in purple below the comment you want to reply to, and it says “reply” believe it or not. The other thing is you don’t need to plug every single article you write for bleacherreport.
So go back and read every thread since the Ole Miss game
And tell me his flaws and so called ‘inexcusable’ failures have not been hashed over and over and over….
No, I don’t think he’s getting a fair shot and I am not a different side of the coin as the idiots that want him flogged and banned.
You guys may have indeed always been a lot more centered than tigerdroppings and the like but since last Saturday it has been completely negative with a few exceptions.
A great example is Jrzl’s post proclaiming “Les just won me back”, Ianoka posted a positive response then GeauxTigers, Ace Venom, Bengal, etc…all went negative.
I was the eight poster and it became a pile on diatribe of shut up SothernMan from there.
(Same on the snap judgments post so don’t characterize it that I just start hijacking threads – I did comment first on this one but I thougt it was valid to point out that his assistants get hired and that’s usually a testament to the head guy)
You guys can say oh its fine we just don’t want you doing this or that, whatever. You want to criticize Miles it’s your right but its also my right to defend him.
And for the love of goodness, I have NEVER said he doesn’t deserve any criticism and I was just as angry as anybody else when we lost to Ole Miss but the reaction was anything but a ‘little cringe.’
On another note, why was it embarrassing to quote accurately – “one of the most embarrassing stretches in recent NCAA history?”
Is it because you’ve defended Miles in the past and you felt like you had been betrayed/proven wrong?
Honestly, I thought about that for a second because that was a lot of people’s knee jerk reaction but then I realized that Tiger Nation was going to go through the roof wanting his head and again, as I have said, that is the worst thing we can do right now.
So I asked myself if I had been wrong about him in the past or if this was just a really, horribly, awfully bad incident – I think it’s the later and the reality is we are on track to be right were we were supposed to be with a VERY bright future ahead.
I don’t want to see anything happen to that so for my small part, as much as I can, I want the good things the Man has done to be part of the conversation.
I’m sorry if you don’t like the way I do it or that I do it but I’m doing it because as our fearless coach would say “I certainly have a want for us to succeed!”
Our (insert d word) fine football coach has represented our University so well and has done so much, I just think he deserves our support. It’s not blind nor un-ending but it certainly should have some patience and I think we are still in that period.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!

On another note, why was it embarrassing to quote accurately – "one of the most embarrassing stretches in recent NCAA history?"
Is it because you’ve defended Miles in the past and you felt like you had been betrayed/proven wrong?
No, it’s because it’s true, Southern. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that, in your continued desire to swat away any criticism, you can’t even see that. Even Dick Vitale made a joke about LSU football’s clock management during the Duke-UConn basketball game. EVERYBODY but you seems capable of acknowledging this.
What is true?
That he screwed up royally and lost us a game that we had in the cross hairs? There is no dening that, I never have, nor has coach Miles, he owned up to it and took all the heat. (More than neccesary according to his players)
I just don’t get from there to “off with his head”, sorry but that’s what I don’t see.
And please never use Dick Vitale to make a football point, he also thinks the Pac-10 is clearly the best football conference in the country.
So for the record and the millionth time LES MILES SCREWED UP, THE GAME AND CLOCK MANAGEMENT @ OLE MISS WAS DEPLORABLE AND HE COST US THE GAME!
AND he is a great CFB coach and is our most succesful ever therefore I happily accept his humble and heartfelt appology!
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
Ok I'm done responding to you on this
You STILL don’t seem to grasp that I’m not calling for his head.
And the Vitale reference is to illustrate how far and wide the absurdity of that situation was, not to make a football point.
You need to work on your reading comprehension.

Typo
“How far and wide the absurdity of that situation was ACKNOWLEDGED”
by GeauxTigers on Nov 30, 2009 9:38 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
My comprehension is fine
You have been just as negative as the most ardent ‘fire miles’ crowd but really, that’s your porogative.
Just as it is my porogative to defend the man.
Your main claim against me is that I don’t acknowledge his mistakes – yet I have done so repeatedly. I just don’t draw the same conclusion as you and some of the others do.
And my point about Vitale would be, so what? Vitale and other talking heads think this or that, big woop.
They think whatever ESPN runs with first. ESPN’s storyline was look at how dumb Miles is maybe he will be on the hotseat – that would be a great story for them. It didn’t pan out quite like they thought (eventhough it was close) and the next week it was look same situation, Miles is all better.
I try not to base my opinions on ‘popular’ culture as it tends to waffle and will often prove faulty over time.
Bottom line, Miles deserves criticism for his mistakes AND he deserves credit for the many good things he does and has done.
Happy day, Geaux Tigers!

Thanks for the sarcasm about the little
purple reply button. I’m sure I can figure it out…
If you don’t like my articles, please feel free to not read them.
For the record, I don’t ‘plug’ them all, just ones I think LSU folks will enjoy and when I first posted I included a poll asking if ATVS folks wanted me to continue posting my links. I don’t remeber the number of people that voted, i think it was a dozen or so and only one said no.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
Haha ok it wasn't meant to be personal
It was just that anytime I see a post of yours I can count on one of two things: a several paragraph essay on how good of a coach Miles is (and I think he’s a good one too), or a one line link to an article. Maybe say something and THEN link it, but whatever, it’s up to you obviously.
Just wondering...
It might be interesting to do an unofficial poll to determine the correlation between support/lack of support for Miles and age. While I have no way of knowing for sure, it would appear that unwavering support for Miles is normally reserved for those who are comparatively older.
It is from the concept that those of us who are “older” tend to be more supportive of and less ready to complain about the coaching. Perhaps that would be true since we have lived through Stovall/Archer/DiNardo/Hallman eras and see Miles from a different perspective. Additionhally, We tend to be more conservative, and do not readily accept change.
Maybe there is no correlation, but would be interesting to see.
From and elder statesman...
I go back to the mid 60’s as an LSU student. My dorm room was in Tiger Stadium. I support Les Miles. He’s our coach. Is he perfect? NO!!! Who is? No one. I liked the way the kids played against Arkansas. I liked the way the coach managed the clock in the drive that tied the game. Lesson learned.
It's likely, but
maybe I’m an outlier? I’m 23 and I absolutely support miles. I’m not about to say he’s infallible but I think he’s a great fit and I’ve got my money on his ability to prove everyone wrong in the long run. Now, if Urban Meyer would just take the ND job maybe I could breathe a little easier.
I may be the youngest one here
But I support Miles. I think he does a good job of correcting things as they come. We don’t throw the deep ball, next game we do. We don’t play good D against Washington, next game we play great D. We don’t run the ball against MSU, next game we have a best rushing game of the season to that point against Georgia. Clock disaster against Ole Miss, next game we tie the game on a last minute drive. We haven’t really dropped off of a cliff, and I see improvement, so I’m hopeful and optimistic.
