Around SBN: 2012 NBA All-Star Game Starters Announced

LSU @ Bama: 2:30pm

LSU Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide, Nov 7, 2009 2:35 PM CST

Dwayne_bowe_bmp_medium

The SEC didn't burden us with a lot of other good games on TV today.  Auburn vs. Furman?  Kentucky vs. Eastern Kentucky?  Tennessee vs. Tennessee Tech?  Not hardly.  The only other halfway decent game is Arkansas vs. South Carolina.  I'm not missing a thing by going to this one.

This will serve as a Game Thread for today, and as an opening monologue for the day.  I will not be participating in the game thread, so you are on your own.

Please post your remembrances of Dwayne Bowe, Jamarcus Russell, Chad Jones, and other heros of the recent past.  Here're my remembrances of Laron Landry:

Radical thought for the day

Instead of playing max protect in the face of the expected Bama blitz, go five wide and throw. Make the quick read and try and expose the weakest link of Bama’s defense: the secondary. Force single coverage and eliminate safety help. Yes, the blitz will result in some sacks, but if we attack the blitz, it will likely result in big plays when one of receivers breaks a tackle. The weakness of a blitz is that it puts a lot of pressure on the secondary. Exploit that weakness.

I’ll be here for the first half, then it’s Wedding Time.

Interesting idea

But it seems like most of our sacks seem to come from empty backfield shotgun formations. I’d rather see some screens to take advantage of their aggressiveness.

CHAD JONES! WOOOO!!!!

by The Bengal on Nov 7, 2009 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

I'm all for attacking their corners

But making them stay in base personnel is probably the way to go there, because they’ll totally just drop back. That’s what Bama did last year a lot.

Poseur,

Understand wedding is in Texas. Were it in Louisiana, a small transistor radio with a Secret Service ear bud would probably work since Jim Hawthorne covers this state like a blanket. However, there could be problems when the Tigers scored and you jumped up and shouted. Guess we’ll all have to watch twice as hard.

But people would understand

Because half of the people in the pews would also be listening to the game.

1st half stats

Total yards: LSU 155, Bama 208
Rushing : LSU 52, Bama 56
Yards per carry: LSU 3.3, Bama 5.1
Passing: LSU 103, Bama 152
Yards per attempt: LSU 7.4, Bama 6.1
3rd downs: Both teams 2-7

Mark Ingram, Heisman candidate – 7 runs for 30 yards, including one 25 yarder.

Penalties killed a couple of our drives early, but we looked to get the momentum going late. D is bending a bit, but I like the job they’ve done in an extremely tough environment. 3 points yielded in the half to the #2 team in the country on the road is worthy of high praise.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 7, 2009 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Stats point to Bama

but their continuing problems in the Red Zone have kept them down. Many of their “continuing problems” are caused by our Defense.

by lawildbull on Nov 7, 2009 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

Stats were even if not for the last drive

When we went into that prevent and gave up a few too many yards before we forced McElroy into that stupid pick.

We’ve gotten away with a few, for sure, but there are elements we can improve as well.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 7, 2009 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

2nd half things you want to se?

Mine:
1. Use the middle of the field in the passing game
2. Stop trying to pound chuck up against Cody
3. More pressure on McElroy

by Draco on Nov 7, 2009 4:25 PM CST reply actions

I don't mind going right at 'em

Even if we’re only getting 3 a pop in there, we can’t let them take the whole thing away. So far we’ve done a solid job

by GeauxTigers on Nov 7, 2009 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

Oh and otherwise

1) Agreed on the middle of the field, figured Dickson would be more involved down the middle

2) Want to see continued pressure on McElroy, just hit him. Jar him. Keep it up, even if we don’t get sacks.

3) More Shepard!!!

by GeauxTigers on Nov 7, 2009 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

There we go...

LSU promoting the design school…very nice.

by janepriceestrada on Nov 7, 2009 4:26 PM CST reply actions

Okay, bama gets the ball first

so let them have it for 3 plays (3 yards total) then make them punt

by lawildbull on Nov 7, 2009 4:27 PM CST reply actions

Good play by McElroy there, getting out of the pressure.

And then just like that Ingram squeezes through for 6.

Ugh, tighten up guys!

by GeauxTigers on Nov 7, 2009 4:33 PM CST reply actions

What the hell is going on?

McElroy making some mistakes so naturally they come out with the run, and we just don’t adjust.

I hate USC

I hate them because the media won’t stop talking about how great they are.

I don't hate JL

I find it pretty disturbing you do. You personally hate a player who gives (literally) his blood sweat and tears for a team you claim to root for? Honestly, I wish LSU didn’t have fans like you.

And fire Les Miles? Really?

I don't doubt that Lee cares about LSU

The guy should be starting in an FCS team. He just doesn’t have the skills to be successful here.

SEC refs can go to hell

Way to hand it to Bama with at least 4 bad calls against the Tigers. I can’t think of a single bad call in favor of the Tigers. Anyone?

1. First possession of the game, Jefferson easily had the first down but they marked it behind the line. This one was obvious.
2. Helmet to the chest of Jefferson in first half, not called.
3. Peterson’s obvious interception in the 4th, reviewed and not awarded.
4. Facemask by Bama lineman on 1st down of LSU’s last possession to get the sack on Lee.

These were all HUGE and all went against LSU. I can’t think of any others but I think there might be more. Any additions? Any bad calls in LSU’s favor?

The first throw of the game to Peek definitely looked like a catch to me. Looked like peek had it firmly grasped in one hand, and the ground caused him to fumble it. Danielson said he thought it was incomplete, but whatever. They didn’t look at it very in depth from what I saw.

It definitely looked like you guys tapped the ball around the 2 causing it to roll down to the ?? inch line on the possession that lead to a safety. That was a pretty big miss if what I saw was correct.

No tivo, so I couldn’t go back and look myself. But those are two that I thought the refs got wrong for your benefit. And as far as #2, what exactly is the rule on that? I thought they just protected them from late hits and hits to the QB’s helmet.

What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

I think that was a late hit

If the ball is clearly out and you lower your head like he did, it’s a late hit. If he had just let his momentum carry him into Jefferson he probably would’ve been fine, but he lowered his head. Wow this sucks.

by Ianoka on Nov 7, 2009 6:42 PM CST up reply actions

If I recall right, it was definitely after the release, but close enough where it’s one of those plays that can go either way. Danielson was only bringing up the lowered helmet though, which as I said I don’t really know the rule on. You guys are probably right, and it should have been a penalty.

It wasn't a late hit

but it was definitely spearing.

Thanks for your input

I’m really trying to be objective with this so I want input from both sides.

As far as #2, the second guy to Jefferson went very clearly head first in a spearing motion. The way I understand it, that’s a personal foul and that’s the way the CBS commentators saw it too. Anyone else have anything definitive on this play?

Apparently at the beginning of the game they had tech problems with the replay booth so my #1 and your Peek possible catch couldn’t be reviewed.

by no brainer on Nov 7, 2009 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not 100% sure on the rule

But I think you have to take the catch all the way to the ground or it doesn’t count. It’s not like a fumble where a ground cause gets blown dead. I believe this happened when Oakland played San Diego on Monday night earlier this year, but maybe NFL and college have different rules on it.

by Ianoka on Nov 7, 2009 7:04 PM CST up reply actions

True, but that only applies until you establish possession. If I recall correctly, he caught the ball in bounds and got knocked out of bounds so that when the ball came out he had already take a few steps with the ball in hand.

What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

by Zoltar on Nov 7, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

If you lead with the crown of the helmet,

it’s spearing. That was a definite personal foul penalty that wasn’t called.

The Peterson was the other one that was a clear (to me) missed call. The others could have been called, but I can see why they were missed.

No excuses though. LSU had a chance to win this game, but injuries and execution cost us the game, not the officials. Credit to Bama (damn, I hate saying that) for playing a great game.

by The Bengal on Nov 7, 2009 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

They did play well

But I come out of that feeling like LSU is the better team. Also I think that the first possession of the game, that spot was inexcusably bad.

by Ianoka on Nov 7, 2009 7:11 PM CST up reply actions

Jefferson fought for more yards after he passed the line and ended up losing yards. Check the replay if you don’t believe me.

Also, I guess Bama should make a case about:
(1) the Smelley catch that was clearly in bounds but no review available b/c technical difficulties (OMG CONSPIRACY THEORY!!! THEY HATE BAMA!!!!! FIRE THE REFS!!!!)
(2) the countless no-holding calls by LSU’s offensive line (Ended up not being an issue b/c we knocked the shit out of your QB eventually.)
(3) Lack of pass interference calls by LSU’s secondary. (We finally got one called late in the game.)

Whining about the refs can go both ways, kids.

I gave 4 clear cut cases and you retort with 1 (I’d like to hear from a less biased commentator on this one given your tone) and a couple of wishy washy gripes that any team can make any game.

Your last condescending statement really just diminishes any point you might be trying to make.

by no brainer on Nov 7, 2009 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

Neither of us have a bias, right?

I could cut up the game film to show holds and PIs, but I don’t have the time nor the desire. My point is your arguments are moot.

And your “a couple of wishy washy gripes that any team can make any game” statement actually furthers my argument concerning calls that ANY fan can complain over. Which is exactly the cue: you are the fan making “wishy washy gripes.”

QED.

Thanks. You guys played pretty well too given all the injuries you had. It was crazy how many of your players got hurt. Hope it was nothing serious for them.

I won’t deny that we got some nice breaks with the officiating, but I don’t think it was anywhere near as bad as the Arkansas/Florida game. Most of them were close judgment calls. It’s not like you guys haven’t gotten a major break on a blatant horrible call (2004 no call on PI in your end zone) or close ones (DJ hall catch overturned in 2007?).

In a perfectly refereed game I think Bama still wins. Anyway, to Bengal and others who are taking it like men, well played. Good luck on your remaining games, and we’ll see ya next year. To those that want to cry about the officiating, your tears sustain us :P

Of course it’s a win for Bama with a perfectly called game. Bama out gained LSU by over 200 yards.

by common on Nov 7, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

And they sucked in the red zone

You’re a moron.

I wasn’t watching LSU’s O-line super close, but I did see Bama’s line hold a ton, and I heard elsewhere that LSU’s line was holding a lot too, which wouldn’t surprise me. If I remember correctly they didn’t call a single holding penalty, which is rare in any game.

As for the P.I. calls, you clearly have no idea how those are called. If the corner is playing the ball, he has just as much of a right to the ball as the receiver does. I think there was one that would’ve been P.I. but it was overthrown big time, and we got the short end of the stick on one of those too. The rest of the one’s that I saw the corner/safety was looking at the ball, and their feet got tangled up. That’s not P.I.

by Ianoka on Nov 8, 2009 10:07 PM CST up reply actions

Agree with your last paragraph. I’m pissed at the refs for those calls I mention above but I’m more pissed at LSU’s lack of execution on several other key plays. Congrats on the win.

by no brainer on Nov 7, 2009 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

Also

I hope Les Miles rips into the refs, screw suspensions and fines, we got hosed. That replay official should never work another game.

by Ianoka on Nov 7, 2009 6:43 PM CST reply actions

Cry it out. Jarrett Lee would have thrown a pick afterwards anyway. He called it as close as he could see it. I’d be bitter about how my team fell apart rather than the officials. But that would also mean that you were a sportsmen, which is out of the question.

by common on Nov 7, 2009 7:27 PM CST up reply actions

I never said it guaranteed a win

But it certainly was a huge call, and it essentially took away our chance to win. And to be perfectly honest, you are the least sporting person I’ve seen commenting after the game.
