Penn State history and some more perspective
Like the Rambler, I come from "enemy territory", Blackshoediaries. Hoping for a great game. The folks on here same a little more level headed than some of the other LSU blogs I have been perusing in the last few days. I did not go to Penn State, but grow up there and wanted to give some facts, stats, etc. Forgive me if you know them.
1. Beaver Stadium-largest stadium in the country for the last 2 years. Michigan is adding more handicapped seating, but is currently smaller.
2. Penn State-largest paying alumni network.
3. Joepa-most bowl wins as coach (23-11-1). Has been at PSU for 60 years, 44 as HC. Only LSU-PSU previous meeting 1974 Orange Bowl: 16-9 Penn State won.
4. We have 810 school wins, 7th all time. 16-16 against the SEC all time.
As for the game itself, Line play will be key. If you have athetic DE's we are in trouble. Holliday will be trouble, and special teams is a definite advantage for you. PSU is like 4th in scoring D, at 11.8 ppg, against some lesser opponents. A KEY matchup not yet talked much about is your offense against our line and linebackers. Secondary is a question mark for us.
I know you have a great D too, giving up something like 16 ppg. I think your offense has struggled somewhat this year, but you definitely have athletes. Our QB Clark can look great against the same talent teams, but has not won a signature game. RB Royster also had a better year last year. Should be a pretty evenly matched game.

Welcome to ATVS
The Penn State fans that have visited have been great to interact with. I think it’s a good close matchup. You’ll have advantages in line play most likely. The strength of our Defense this year has been linebackers and secondary. The strength of our offense…well, we have great special teams.
We’re #12 on total wins at 710. I still think it’s incredible our two schools have only played once in our histories.
CHAD JONES! WOOOO!!!!
I've checked out Black Shoe Diaries (PSU blog)...
and they are definitely getting pumped up because of Jefferson’s quote.
“Our two conferences are a lot different,” Jefferson said Monday after the Tigers’ first practice in preparation for the bowl. “The SEC has a lot more speed-type people. They (the Big 10) have a lot more big guys. We’ve got great receivers and running backs to try to take advantage of something Penn State doesn’t have.”
They are talking about how they’re faster and better than LSU and how they love that LSU is so overconfident. There are also one or two derogatory statements about southerners / the SEC. LSU and Bama had a great game this year and I’m sure will have many more to come. I’m definitely rooting for y’all in this one. Geaux Tigers and Roll Tide!
Listen you bama tro.....
oh, nevermind. :-)
Yea, they have their black shoe panties all in a wad.
It’ll be ok though, I think Les will have us ready to play.
I can’t bring myself to give you that whole tide tumble cheer thing but I’m pretty sure you guys will have the crystal.
Go forth and conquer.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
See, and here I was thinking that the general idea for an offense was to look at the opposing defense and see what qualities they did and didn’t have, and try to find a way for your guys to get mismatches. But apparently, that’s just overconfidence.

I think the B10 folk
are just really sensitive to the SEC speed argument and that’s what it sounded like coming from JJ.
I don’t think it matters if we don’t put that speed in position to take advantage of it and I’m not sure PSU is slow by any measure, we’ll see.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
Penn State fan here...
I see a couple reasons for all the hoopla around Jefferson’s quote. Firstly, yes, us Big Tenners are very sensitive about the team speed arguments. I like to think that teams with the better players tend to win the games, with speed being but one of many aspects playing into it. I think we can all agree on that, and most would agree that Jefferson’s quote wasn’t the least bit inflammatory.
Secondly, and way more importantly in my view, this is the calm before the storm. There is very little to talk about that hasn’t already been disected 100 different ways, and so it’s necessary to inject some fake controversy now and again. It’s just something to talk about to fill the time.
So in conclusion, Southern Man pretty much hit the nail on the head. Here’s hoping for a great game on New Years!
One thing the OP forgot to mention about PSU
- party school.
just saying…
We have little tranquility but tons of tranquilizers.
