Go Razorbacks!

Up 2-0 in top 1st. Show those hubrisians that they’re idiots.

2 on, no out, freshman pitcher on the mound

Why are you bunting?

Wow, this is new, a freshman struggling a bit in Omaha. I can’t believe I’m gonna type this, but WOO PIG SOOEY!

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 1:24 PM CDT reply actions

Hit batsman

Thank God the umpire actually enforced the rule on trying to avoid a hit by pitch. There’s nothing worse than a player leaning into a pitch. Of course, the second HBP was legit and he was awarded first base.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 1:40 PM CDT reply actions

No

We thought about it, but I’ve been travelling so much for work recently that I’m just enjoying being at home. I may still try and go for the title series if we make it.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Freshman still struggling, throwing a lot of pitches

Arkansas’s pitcher is doing alright through the first 4 batters. Advantage Arkansas so far.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 1:46 PM CDT reply actions

SEC! SEC! SEC!

I just wanted to say that

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 2:05 PM CDT reply actions

Still early

They can still very easily win this game. They can score lots of runs. That said, I hated their attitude of taking a very good Arkansas team for granted. I believe in the baseball gods and one should not anger them.

Play every game as if it is Game 3 of the Championship Series. Worry about the next game tomorrow.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

9-2 Arkansas

Looking really good for the Razorbacks at this point.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

9-2!

Three-run shot!

Ramirez officially allowed 7 runs and 3 2/3 innings. CSF has now used their #2 and #3 starters. Good thing they didn’t use their ace, eh? Don’t need him to shut down Arkansas….

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 2:35 PM CDT reply actions

their ace is up in the pen

but their #3 starter has kind of settled down a bit. Too bad.

9-4 after 6

CSF showing signs of life, but its still a pretty big lead

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 3:24 PM CDT reply actions

That'll do, pig.

That’ll do.

10-6, final.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 4:27 PM CDT reply actions

wow, best case scenario

Fullerton goes down, and AR-kansas used their lefty up.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

It's the best-case scenario...

only if we beat Virginia. If we beat UVA, we’re in really good shape against Arkansas on Monday.

GIBBS!

Big 2-out single. We are up early! Had to get to that lefty

I hate to thank about the conversation we just had at the mound.

Kudos to Poseur

Fantastic post about UCF looking past Ar=Kansas. Any prognostication here?

by lawildbull on Jun 13, 2009 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

Not to jinx it...

But I have not been this confident in an LSU team since 1997.

That was a horrible call. To our benefit. but horrible. Almost as bad as Schimpf’s play on the ball.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

What a break here. Thanks for white pants.

by lawildbull on Jun 13, 2009 6:37 PM CDT reply actions

Nice, Nice Catch

I was a about to say just pitch strikes and let the defense play.

by tommyguniii on Jun 13, 2009 6:44 PM CDT reply actions

Ranaudo's been burnt

He has way too many hits allowed for a guy with as many K’s as he throws. The defense always seems to let him down. Nice to see Mahtook buck that trend.

I Have To Admit As An LSU Alumi

several generations, baseball I don’t follow them much until they get to the regional. Which is strange I might add, cause when I was at LSU in the early 90s and Skip was there, and we won and won, tickets for students were free. I saw dozens and dozens of games. But hard to follow a thousand miles away :).

Get The Ball Down

if you are going to miss, miss low, not high or in the middle of the strike zone.

and as a Cards fan I know a little about play in the middle infield :).

Ranaudo does not look sharp

Is his workload this postseason catching up to him? He looks off.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions

Ranaudo doesn't look sharp, concur

We need to get some runs across. We won’t win a pitcher’s duel today.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 7:14 PM CDT reply actions

Our Defense seems to be on tonight,

which is great since Ranaudo is less than his normal self.

In 61 pitches, 28 balls, 33 strikes. His normal work rate is closer to 2 strikes per ball.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

Ranaudo

He’s been off all game. Pitcher abuse is cuumlative and we kept throwing him out there for huge pitch counts. He’s been nowehere near the strike zone most of tonight.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

Pitching

Now that we’re in the pen, what do you do if you’re Mainieri? You have five innings to worry about. You figure one will be thrown by Ott. One by Jones. Do you let Bert go the other three? Or bring in Cain as a long reliever?

Or look to a starter like Bradshaw?

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

Inning by inning..

Leave in Bert as long as he’s effective. Don’t let any hitter see any pitcher twice. I say Bert the next inning, maybe 2. Then go with Cain. Get Byrd throwing for lefties. Use the whole pen if necessary.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Read my mind

I just don’t know how long Bert can go. But let’s ride him as long as we can.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I've got to assume we're going to go deep in the tourney.

So that makes Bradshaw, Ross, and Coleman (obviously) off limits.

I think I leave Burt in until he get’s into a jam. I don’t worry about his pitch count or inning. I’d let him go until Ott if he was cruising.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 8:04 PM CDT reply actions

With how spread out the tourney is..

you don’t have to worry so much about it. Coleman’s off-limits unless it’s very tight in the 8th inning, but there’s no reason not to consider Ross. He wouldn’t have to start until at least wednesday.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Rotation

Heck, with Ranaudo’s short start today, we might be able to do a three-man rotation unless we lose today. Coleman on Monday, Ross on Wednesday, and then back to Ranaudo.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I still don't use any starters...

If we lose tonight, and still have Coleman, Ross, and Bradshaw available, we’ve got a chance to work our way out of the losers bracket.

If we burn Bradshaw, we may have Ranaudo back by that 4th game since he only threw 60 pitches or so tonight, but if he really is worn down, Bradshaw may be the better option.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

The schedule is..

Saturday, Monday, (Wednesday), Friday, Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

The Wednesday game is if you’re in the loser’s bracket. Ranaudo can come back for one of the Friday games, and possibly the Wednesday game. We won’t need our #3 starter until Wednesday or Friday. We can use a starter tonight and bring him back Wednesday or next Friday or later.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Still pissed

About nola not going back to first on that double play ball. WTF was he thinking?

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:17 PM CDT reply actions

Wide camera shot..

..it looked like he was there. Maybe not. Damn.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Defense

If you’re gonna be praised for your defense, you better make plays. He was pretty bad in the Supers. Though he did have a huge hit in the regionals and made a nice stab earlier in this game.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

If you watch the replay, when nola got the ball..

no one was at first yet. It would have risked throwing the ball into the dugout.

i don’t really have any plans right now, but I expect to be doing something or another.

Richard Pittman

HA!

Gotcha, just spreading the word early.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Good at bats

You know, both of his strikeouts were good at bats. That’s what a good approach gets you at the plate. He really was due.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Alright.. it's a new game now

Time for Ross to have the game of his life. We need another 2 innings out of him.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

Not really

We just need him to be solid for a few innings.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I know

It’s not like we didn’t discuss it on this very site. And though hes a first rounder, that doesn’t mean he can hit a LHP

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:37 PM CDT reply actions

I like Mainieri..

but some of his decisions are very difficult to defend.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Decisions

I don’t think he makes any truly awful decisions, but he does make some decisions which I think are not the best. He overworked Ranaudo in the postseason without reason, he loves to bunt (though he holds that in check), and he is addicted to his favorite players regardless of their play.

Sure, problems. But not really that bad. And his positive decisions far outweigh the negatives. Particularly his steadying influence and lack of panic.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The thing is that he does the hard things really well.

It’s hard to build a good team in the face of the MLB draft. You need to sign good players who aren’t going to sign MLB out of high school. It’s hard to motivate. He is, therefore, an excellent coach.

The thing is, figuring out to bench Mitchell against lefties is EASY. Figuring out to quit bunting is EASY. I don’t know why we keep making the same simple mistakes.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

that's a second potential double play that only ended up as one out..

not sure what happened there. I guess Lemahieu didn’t field it cleanly.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

LeMahieu

Bobbled them both. At least we got the one out on both of those.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Schimpf's had a bad game so far....

That’s all I got. I have no idea why you bunt Schimpf.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Poseur manages the pen...

… I think there’s a lefty due up. Leave Jones in for that matchup. Then bring in Cain. As soon as he lets up a baserunner, bring in Ott.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:10 PM CDT reply actions

Quiet bot 7..

Let’s get 3 quick outs here and get into the home stretch.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 9:18 PM CDT reply actions

Coleman

In a big middle finger sort of move

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

This is the sort of move I said would be good against Rice..

I can’t complain about it now. If he gets through this innng quickly, he comes back on Monday no problem.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 9:21 PM CDT reply actions

I like it

This is making a statement about how important this game is. He’s going all out.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I criticized Rice for doing this sort of thing..

but it was a different situation. Rice showed us their entire bullpen and burned up a starter for the next game. With an extra day between games, I think it changes things.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Completely different

First off, we’re up while Rice was down big while they were burning up relievers. Also, this isn’t a best of three series. This is a double elimination tournament. coming out of the loser’s bracket is really hard, especially with CSF sitting there. You burn the pen to win this game. They’ll rest tomorrow.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions

OK, so we burn up a little of Coleman's juice for his Monday start.

We bring in Ross in relief for Monday’s game if needed, and Ranaudo starts Wednesday.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:21 PM CDT reply actions

Oh?

When do we play then?

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Loser's bracket game is on wednesday..

if you win the first two games, you don’t play again until FRIDAY.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh gosh,

that changes everything.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Poseur,

What is your theory on Freshman closers?

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

Matty Ott

I have faith in Ott. And its not like you can’t start a freshman like UVa did. He just better be your Friday starter. Don’t promote a freshman like UCF did.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

At least we got that..

but it would be nice not to have the out.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 13, 2009 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

The hit and run

I fucking hate the hit and run even more than I hate the bunt. This cost us a baserunner AND most of LeMaheiu’s at bat. The hit and run is an abomination before God. While the bunt is usually a bad idea, the hit and run is ALWAYS a bad idea.

And LeMahieu gets a hit when you just let him hit. I’m actually angry even though we scored.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:37 PM CDT reply actions

Well my shirt will improve to 4-5!!!

We’re going to need it this year for football season fella’s, we’ve got to build its confidence back.

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

It was only a freshman last year...

Maybe I put it into too many tough situations too fast?

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Hats off to UVa

This game was much closer than the score. They battlled hard and really pushed us. I believe this is a truly great LSU team, and the Cavs pushed them to the limit. They deserve tons of credit.

They have nothing to be ashamed of. A few breaks, and they win this game. I was more afraid of the Cavs than any other our side of the bracket.

by Poseur on Jun 13, 2009 9:50 PM CDT reply actions

Concur

The Arky-Fullerton game really played out to our benefit too. Hopefully we’ve got a fun week ahead!

by LSU Jonno on Jun 13, 2009 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Hultzen's the best LHP we'll see on this side of the bracket..

and we beat him, without getting a good starting performance from Ranaudo. I think we’re in really good shape.
