I flew first class

Free drinks! I’ve been liquored up since noon. Off topic, but how about that USA soccer?

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Hit by pitch...

If they dont give him first after letting a Texas hitter take first last night after leaning into the pitch… I’m gonna kill someone

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

LET'S GO!!

First game I’ve been able to watch in live action this CWS…

by GeauxTigers on Jun 24, 2009 6:15 PM CDT reply actions

I called that..

I said to Mrs. ATVS, “Hit a homer! He’s been tearing the cover off the ball, but he’s been hitting them low.”

He’s been tearing the cover off the ball, but he’s been hitting them low."

You could even say he was….DUE!!!!

by LSU Jonno on Jun 24, 2009 6:20 PM CDT reply actions

Feeling good!

I’ve got my first football NC shirt on….second NC shirt is on reserve next to me. Went big tonight with whiskey and have had my hand on the glass for every pitch past the first four batters. Let’s do this!

by janepriceestrada on Jun 24, 2009 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

Les Miles

I love that Les is out there supporting the baseball team. You don’t see Mack Brown in the stands. The relationship between these coaches has helped the baseball team immeasurably.

We are all LSU.

Walked in just in time

to see the smash. Took some time to get the laptop going while celebrating

by lawildbull on Jun 24, 2009 6:25 PM CDT reply actions

I have always had a problem with umpires who delay their call.

They are calling attention to themselves when, in my opinion, the umps/refs should be invisible.

by lawildbull on Jun 24, 2009 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Groundball

Good result, but you can’t control where the ground ball goes exactly. Ranaudo pitched it roght, got the groundball he wanted, but it just found a hole. It happens.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Mike Patrick

Already called it a small strike zone. Last night was huge. Let’s see if the ump calls it both ways.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:32 PM CDT reply actions

Terrible at bat by Keyes

Ranaudo needs to settle down or he’s going to have a long night.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

He WAS settled

The second single was a seeing-eye single, and the walk was the reult of two balls which would have been strikes last night being called balls. He then adjusted and struck out the third hitter.

I’m not that worried. They didn’t hit a ball hard and now AR knows the strike zone.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:36 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry..

Decided to watch from the office

This is where I watched on Monday. On Wednesday, I watched from home and look what happened.

Poseur, I assume you’re back at the same hotel bar?

by 4.0 Point Stance on Jun 24, 2009 6:38 PM CDT reply actions

Nope

Back in the secret compound in Dallas.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't want to face their game 1 starter...

Good news is he can probably only throw 2 innings

by LSU Jonno on Jun 24, 2009 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

Saved a run

Big play by the second baseman. Terrible camera work by ESPN.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Erin Andrews

Is she the official reporter for Texas or something? She’s been in their dugout three straight games.

I’m just sayin….

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:53 PM CDT reply actions

Nola

If you’re gonna hit 220, you better make the defensive plays.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

might be my fault...

glass is empty. used commercial break to refill. hand on the glass is definitely the key.

by janepriceestrada on Jun 24, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions

ok.

drinking during pitch is not advised though…just gave up that double.

by janepriceestrada on Jun 24, 2009 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Now I'm deathly afeard of this Moldenhauer fellow

On the plus side, at least he does ground into the occasional DP

by GeauxTigers on Jun 24, 2009 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

Man that Texas LSU defense is good

by LSU Jonno on Jun 24, 2009 7:17 PM CDT reply actions

He's officially in trouble in my book.

LSU’s going to need a lot more runs to win this.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

Jesus...

…nerve wracking at bat

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 7:31 PM CDT reply actions

Huge out

Now they need to score.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 7:33 PM CDT reply actions

WTF?

Trust your second baseman, Nola.

God, what a miserable inning. Ranaudo needs to get it together. Now. e’s not giving up hard hits, but he can’t find the plate. Admittedly, the strike zone is miniscule, but he has to pitch to the plate and trust his defense. They aren’t hitting the ball hard.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

that was a weird play

Nola easily could’ve gotten his fingers stomped

by 4.0 Point Stance on Jun 24, 2009 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

He's got to find some off-speed pitch

It doesn’t have to be great, just something he can get over the plate.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 7:37 PM CDT reply actions

Odd that we're up 4-2 and I feel like we're losing

Of course that’d change in a heartbeat if Ranaudo started finding that strike zone

by GeauxTigers on Jun 24, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

Terrible inning

We needed something. Just some baserunners.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

Need an easy half inning here

Texas has found some stability on the mound.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 7:41 PM CDT reply actions

Strikes

Throw them. Trust the defense.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 7:44 PM CDT reply actions

Nice inning for Ranaudo..

He found hte strike zone and pitched a lot better. I think he can get through 2 more if he keeps pitching like that.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

One thing our pitching staff lacks..

is a guy who comes out and just throws ground balls

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

It's easy to be critical of ranaudo's performance here..

but where has our hitting been the last 3 innings?

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 8:01 PM CDT reply actions

Ranaudo

is about the unluckiest pitcher ever. He’s only given up two hard hit balls all game. One was a double and the other was a 2-run shot. He’s let up 4 runs while only giving up two hard hit balls all game.

Which is frighteningly typical for him.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Mahtook

Has there been a more up and down player in Omaha? He’s had huge, HUGE hits and then some of the worst at bats you’ve ever seen. Glad the good Mahtook came up there. HUGE at bat.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:24 PM CDT reply actions

Was going to say exactly the same thing

Namely his first four at bats on Monday, bad strikeouts and a DP. Maybe it was just 2K’s and the DP but still…the dude doesn’t get bent out of shape no matter what, it seems. Awesome.

by GeauxTigers on Jun 24, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Talk about overdue

I wouldn’t mind seeing Landry hit here, honestly

by 4.0 Point Stance on Jun 24, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Helenihi

First, that looked like a homer off the bat. Also, his defense really has been good enough to justify his crappy performance at the plate.

/end of Helenihi fanclub

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree..

thing is, we know he’s a better hitter than that too. he SHOULD be hitting better. It’s hard to say he shouldn’t be in.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Sac bunts

As much as I hate sac bunts, the sac bunt that turns into a hit is the most demoralizing thing in baseball form a defense. Great hustle!

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:27 PM CDT reply actions

Wood

BTW – this is why you don’t have Mitchell any higher in the order. Can’t have three straight lefties in the order. Ochinko breaks up the lefties.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:31 PM CDT reply actions

First batter Wood faced in game one was J Mitch

And the result was a 2 run triple….pleeeeeeeease deja vu?

by GeauxTigers on Jun 24, 2009 8:33 PM CDT reply actions

I can't complain about that..

I think Dean’s a little stronger against lefties

Coolest tradition

I love how Skip instituted the practice of having the relieved pitcher always giving words of encouragment to the guy coming in. It really stresses team.

This just in: I like Skip a lot. And love that Mainieri has embraced Skip’s role.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

Love Skip.

We saw him speak at a fundraising thing with former chancellor Sean O’Keefe and James Carville. Of those three guys (as good as they were), Skip was the most interesting. When he was done I wanted to pick up a gun and go to war with him…an amazing motivator.

by janepriceestrada on Jun 24, 2009 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

when all is said and done

Ranaudo’s stat line isn’t going to look that bad

by 4.0 Point Stance on Jun 24, 2009 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

He was gutty in the 4th and 5th

(particularly after the HR), when LSU DESPERATELY needed him. He gets a lot of credit for hanging in there without his best stuff.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

WOW!

Did you see how Gibbs ran off before the strike call?

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

But short leash. He has yet to face a righty.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

48-0 after when leading after 6 innings...

…awful reminiscent of UT being 39-0 when leading after 8 going into Game 1

by GeauxTigers on Jun 24, 2009 8:55 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, do those stats really reassure anyone?

Doesn’t it just make you think they’re due?

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

It was a little funny

especialy when you consider.. we don’t have any defensive subs unless they want to bring out Landry for LF

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I still think that a lineup of

Helenihi 3B, Nola SS, Lemahieu 2B, Schimpf 1B, Landry LF might be our best offensive AND defensive lineup.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not?

We have no idea what is limits in innings are. In a title game, you push the limits.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Chad Jones for MVP!

Seriously, let him keep pitching. Why risk putting in Bert – who’s an unknown – for someone who we know is omwing them down

by 4.0 Point Stance on Jun 24, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

so

over on the texas SB nation board they are now bitching about Miles committing recruiting violations during his stay in Omaha…

I like that they aren’t talking baseball

by LSU Jonno on Jun 24, 2009 9:09 PM CDT reply actions

That board is so out of control with people who know nothing about sports.

The posters are generally pretty good. The commenters have no clue.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Our bullpen

Has been THE deciding factor of this CWS so far. It was universally deried, but it has been awesome so far, by far the most effective pen in Omaha. Hell, even in Game Two.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 9:10 PM CDT reply actions

Excellent Point

Even yesterday LSU got great work from Cain.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Poseur's absolutely right.

The bullpen was huge against Virginia and against Texas in the first game

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Six innings...

… of shutout ball between Cain and Bradshaw. They did great work. It was the rest of the team that went to pot.

by Poseur on Jun 24, 2009 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

when you think about it, we got good OVERALL pitching (thanks entirely to Cain and Bradshaw) and would have won the game if we’d hit like we usually do. We just ran into a buzz saw of a starting pitcher.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 24, 2009 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

A little off-topic, but

has Wood been the same since his BC outing?

but he really hasn’t been hit hard. I think he’s in a slump

by LSU Jonno on Jun 24, 2009 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Austin Wood

That guy threw 199 pitches in two days. I’ll never say a bad word about him. He’s got guts.

But his coach shouldn’t have done that to him.

Another aside

Any guess as to the percentage of LSU versus Texas fans there. It’s pretty clear it’s majority LSU which kind of surprises me, but is it 75-25 or more 60-40.

by DoubleB on Jun 24, 2009 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

Are our bats really that much more awake than theirs?

Clearly they’re somewhat so, but feels like we’re just doing a much better job of not leaving any on base

by lawildbull on Jun 24, 2009 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

Helenihi

is the player most LSU fans think Nola is. I absolutely love the guy. He’s been bashed so much and relegated to the bench, he might be my favorite player on the team just for that. He’s a gamer. He’s not our best player by any stretch, but he is my favorite…

…other than Coleman

BTW, I know the BON commenters can be kinda sucky..

But Peter Bean, who runs the show over there, is good people. He’s the guy who recruited me into ATVS from GeauxTuscaloosa, where Poseur and I had been writing before. I think he pays little attention to baseball though. Anyway, be respectful. Talk only good-natured trash.
