We went with the "veteran" lineup..

which I think is a good idea against a pitcher like Berry.

I HATE BUNTING

Pittman,

This link is to an statistical analysis of bunting which goes much further than any rational baseball fan should go. It is, however, a wonderful cure for insomnia.

Bottom line, there are cituations when it is statistically advantageous to bunt, however those are few and far between.

OK Lemahieu get it started.

Good baserunning

Don’t watch the ball, just run it out and look to the base coach. He did it right.

Looks like a take signal is on

No one is swinging until there is strike. Gets the pitch count up and it seems to be rattling Berry

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

didn't get to him..

but jacked up his pitch count and saw a lot of his pitches.

nice bunt

thanks for the out

First base open

I’d consider the unintentional intentional walk against Rendon

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 4:27 PM CDT reply actions

Nevermind

Three straight fastballs!

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Just for Fun

1.526 Expected Run in half inning now down to 1.336 based on the statistical analysis of that bunt at the web site identified above.

Bunting is a bad idea..

bunting against a strikeout pitcher is even worse. You’re less likely to hit into a DP against a strikeout pitcher, and you’re less likely to get the hit or sac fly you need to bring the run across too.

AGREE

Just think it is nice that someone took the effort to do the statistical analysis to prove what any real baseball fan intuitively knew. However, “conventional wisdom”, whatever that is, so often over rules logic.

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

What is this? 40 pitches now?

Even though we aren’t hitting him this inning, we’re making him throw pitches.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 6, 2009 4:42 PM CDT reply actions

Good job Nola!

Lemahieu can get him in. Second time through the order now.

Whoo..

nice play at first on a tough throw. Oh well. I think we’re in really good shape this game though.

OK coleman..

Just do your thing and I think we win this game.

I Have Confidence

the Tigers will join the Razorbacks in Omaha

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

The hit and run

Might be the only play dumber than the bunt. Thanks, Rice.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 4:52 PM CDT reply actions

nice play by helenihi..

now go do something at the plate.. you’re up 3rd this inning.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 6, 2009 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

aggressive baserunning..

and we’re out again.

Richard Pittman

by Richard Pittman on Jun 6, 2009 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

Great throw to get him

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

But it wasn’t a long throw. And really, it wasn’t a perfect throw, it was behind the runner. Ochinko ain’t Mithcell. Or even Schimpf.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Bad idea

Ochinko should’ve held. 1st or 3rd out at 3rd and all that.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 5:14 PM CDT reply actions

Like to know

Didcoach call him on or did he keep going on his own.

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Awful defense

Why errors are overrated. That play was awful by Mahtook foolowed up by an even worse relay throw. No errors, but just awful defense.

And that’s when you bunt… when you can’t hit. And what a gift on the stolen base call.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 5:25 PM CDT reply actions

Thanks

Stuff just kept happening… and I’m more interesting in watching than posting…

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Just when I think

Coleman is running out of gas, he comes back with a K

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

Crush it

Pretty swing, long flight…HR Helenini

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 5:54 PM CDT reply actions

3 run lead

Anyone think Rice can score 3 runs in 4 innings?

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 5:57 PM CDT reply actions

2 outs

Thank God we bunted.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 6:00 PM CDT reply actions

Intentional walks...

… are the bunts of defensive strategy. Don’t give away outs, but don’t give away free baserunners.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Would love to see

My defense against your offense, with no give aways of outs or baserunners, Hit, catch and throw!

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Perfect throw

It looked like he might have been safe but that was a perfect throw, so you get that call.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

I will accept this one, but not Mahtook

by lawildbull on Jun 6, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

The throw was just so good, I can’t blame an ump for giving him the benefit of the doubt on the tag. It wasn’t even until replay that I thought JMitch might be safe. And I’m not 100% sure he was. Or even 50%.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

One more inning

One more of Coleman, then Ott. Then we celebrate… that’s the plan anyway.

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Ott

Why wasn’t he up in the pen? What? He can’t go 1 2/3?

by Poseur on Jun 6, 2009 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

Cheers

Hoist one for the Tigers
