The Countdown -- LSU #7
Yes, it's another LSU preview, this one from the New York Times. I never get sick of LSU previews, but the real reason I'm linking to it is pure ego -- our humble little blog gets a mention in the Grey Lady. The New York Friggin' Times. The preview itself is also really good.

How come no one has really mentioned Rueben Randle as a wildcat quarterback? Didn’t he play quarterback his senior year and do pretty dang good? You don’t have to be Peyton Manning throwing-wise to run the wildcat, you just have to keep the defense a little bit honest.
I think the reasons are:
1. While Rueben would probably run it pretty well, Russell Shepard would run it better, and
2. Rueben is more valuable on the outside as a potential receiver in the wildcat.
I can envision an offense in which Jefferson is not in the game, with Sheppard and Randle alternating at quarterback, but I think there is such a thing as getting too cute. Practice time is limited and you have to make choices about how you spend your time. Every minute of practice time you use installing a specialty package is a minute you aren’t working on your base offense. At some point, you get diminishing returns in specializing and start losing a lot of ground on working out the kinks of your base offense.
