LSU 31 - Washington 23: Snap Judgments
It's 1:00am and we have won. Here are my quick thoughts:
- It doesn't exactly feel like a loss, but it doesn't feel like a big win either. It feels disappointing, like a let-down.
- the defense had a lot of problems. It's not that they couldn't do anything right, but for most of the game we would put together a couple of good plays only to give up a big 3rd down play.
- Terrence Toliver had a rough first quarter, but then blew up, scoring two touchdowns on two catch-and-runs in which he made good moves on defensive backs. Toliver was probably the offensive player of the game for us.
- We could not get the power running game going, which is supposed to be our biggest team strength. Our offensive line, in particular, will have to play better. Charles Scott also had a pretty forgettable night.
- Jordan Jefferson had a pretty nice night. He started 1 for 6 but after that went 10 for 13 with 3 touchdowns and zero INTs. He was also effective with his legs and had an ATVSQBPI of 10.2 yards per play
- Our inability to run the ball effectively with Charles Scott meant we had a lot of 3-and-outs, which meant we were killed in the time of possession stats. The coaches will have to diagnose the problems there and figure out why we couldn't run inside effectively.
- That said, Keiland Williams had a pretty nice night with 8 touches for 60 yards.
- The biggest mysteries are a) where was Russell Shepard? b) where was Rueben Randle? c) where were all the other members of the Class of 2009? As far as I can tell, the only true freshman who gave up his redshirt tonight was punter Derek Helton.
- I don't want to be too critical of the defensive line. I thought they got pretty good pressure at least some of the time. They will have to stay more disciplined with their rush lanes whenever we face a mobile QB though.
- Patrick Peterson was awesome.

I agree
“I don’t want to be too critical of the defensive line. I thought they got pretty good pressure at least some of the time. They will have to stay more disciplined with their rush lanes whenever we face a mobile QB though”.
That had a lot to do with why they got so many conversions on third down. ^
Think Crowton played it vanilla tonight. I was glade to see that we could turn it on and score when needed like we did on the drive when Lafell scored.
I think we are a pass run team this year where as last year we were a run then pass team. I think the pass will set up the run this year .
Just my thoughts
"It is What It Is"
What's alarming...
….is that we could never establish a running game. Always 2nd and long, 3rd and 5. Couldn’t open the playbook up because the offense was never in rhythm.
My number 1 disappointment was the offensive line….or maybe JJ wasn’t making the right reads…either way they were shooting the gaps and in the backfield very quickly.
My number 2 disappoint was special teams. Our return teams looked confused and never really adjusted to the pooch kicks. Our punter was tragically awful… averaged somewhere just over 30 yrds a game. High school players start at that range.
My number 3 disappoint was with the coaching staff. An all-out blitz on 3rd and 12 to start the game? Stupid. Gave the Huskies the boost they needed. Everything could have been different if we don’t make such a horrendous call. And why in the world would Les Miles call time out when the Huskies had the ball at the end of the first half??? Practically gave Washington 3 pts.
Given the quality of the players we supposedly have this game is a MAJOR disappointment.
Agreed, BUT
All three of these breakdowns can be traced back to the coaching, especially considering the talent on hand. Great recruiters, so-so field managers?

Oh, and uh...
if it wasn’t for Tolliver’s moves, we’d be 0-1 right now.

I actually understand calling those time outs at the end of the first half.
You have Trindon Holiday, one of the most dynamic returners in the country. Why wouldn’t you give him a chance to break something big and either score or get great field position for your offense? It would have been a great way to steal the momentum that was building on Washington’s side. That they didn’t stop the Huskies, I think, doesn’t change that.
If I were the LSU coaching staff, I’d figure out what happened with that power running game. Washington’s run D didn’t soften until Terrence Toliver started abusing Greg Walker, and even then it was the option that was gashing the defense. You might have to trust Jordan Jefferson more, to open lanes for Scott.
LSU showed the will that comes with championship experience to pull away, but Miles and your coaching staff have a lot of film to review.
What's wrong with a blitz on 3rd and 12?
Do you remember Arkansas, two years ago, in overtime, 4th and 10? Ring any bells? We didn’t blitz, and Dick had all day to throw, and they converted the 4th down. I don’t think a defense should ever be criticized for being too aggressive. The only way to stop an offense is to force them into mistakes, because if both the offense and the defense execute their plays to perfection, the offense will win every single time.
Sometimes, the offense calls the exact right play for the defense you called..
and vice versa. No matter what defense you call, there is a play that, if executed properly, will gash it. As it happened, they ended up in the play that was built to beat the defense we called.

Great game atmosphere
It was a clear night and the atmosphere was great! A couple of observations:
1) A Tennessee fan said remember the phrase “3rd & Chavis”… It haunted us this game
2) Punter needs to step his game
3) Team seemed a bit “tight”/not loose
BTW, Josh Downs did get in on a couple of series.
The LSU fans that made it up made a great showing!
From another Tennessee fan...
It was great to see the number of LSU fans representing at the game.
That said, the “Third and Chavis” moniker was one earned over many years at UT. Chavis will throw a 12-yard DB cushion on 3rd and 8 more often than not. LSU has immense talent and I hope Chavis can take advantage of it.
Good luck to the Tigers this year.
Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

Please allow me...
to say thank you. I am a die hard Husky fan and I just wanted to say thanks to all the LSU fans that came up to Seattle. I was walking around campus when I heard music and cheers from a scenic(sp) vista. I thought I would have to chase some kids off the lawn, and then I stumbled into the LSU official tailgate. Needless to say I was treated great, fed gumbo and alcohol till I had to peal myself away and get to the game. Absolute class! I look forward to 2012. My dawgs played their hearts out and I am looking forward to a much different season than 0-12.
Geaux Tigers and Sickem Dawgs!!!

Thanks Husky Fan!
Good to hear good reviews of our folks treating opponents’ fans with respect. Always like the Huskies ever since Warren Moon. Hope Sark turns y’all around soon – it looks like he’s got it going in the right direction already.
I thought..
Peterson play a GREAT game.
The defensive line played up to potential in spots. Need to be more consistent.
That we should have looked to pass more on that Husky team.
The running suffered because that’s what the Huskies keyed on all night. It was the only thing they had a hope of stopping.
That PP and CJ seem to be the only DBs who can highpoint the ball.
Eugene and Hawkins disappointed me again with their play.
The O-line looked average.
Sarkesian opened it up for their Super Bowl, while Crowton kept it pretty vanilla.
Also..
If we were overlooked a bit in the SEC West before the game, we are an afterthought now. Although that may work in our favor.
We have 3 more “learner” games to get it right though. God I hope we don’t play to our next 3 opponents level.
Right now I'm scared...
of what Florida will do to us in our own stadium. Right now, I’m hoping we re-create what happened with Bo Pellini – when his defense stunk it up big time in Arizona on the first game of the Les Miles (and Bo Pellini) era. The defense went on to be a strong point, and one year later resulted in a National Championship (that is if my memory is correct on all this).
As for one point I have on our defense – I honestly couldn’t tell you if we were man or zone most of the time. But it seems with the horses we have, we should be lining up mano y mano. I like our chances then.
I'm not scared..
I’m unconvinced that Florida has found their replacement for Harvin, who I think had a much greater impact on that teams success than Gator Nation will have you believe, and Lewis Murphy also. I also believe we will have corrected our glaring concerns by 10th of October. Will it be enough to win? I hope so.
