SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings "
As you can see, I went a bit off the reservation this week as I went far more off resume than any other factor. #1 losing gives you a good chance to re-evaluate things. Explanations after the jump:
The first thing I did was look at a team's best wins. Who did you lose to is an important factor but not as much as who did you beat? What have you actually accomplished?
1-5. With that in mind, there is no doubt in my mind no team has done more than Oklahoma this season. They have two wins over top 25 teams (AFA and FSU) and they won their annual rivalry game with Texas. I did toy with the idea of Oregon at #1 based off the Stanford win, but the resume is kind of thin after that. I'd say their third best win is Tennessee which, by contrast, is LSU's fifth best win. LSU doesn't have any top tier wins, but just loads and loads of good wins (UNC, WVU, Miss St, Florida, and maybe Tennessee). Also, what about Sparty? They have wins over Michigan, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame. Those are some good wins so far. Boise sneaks in ahead of TCU because VT is showing signs of life again.
6-10. Yes, Ohio St is #7. Take away the name, what have they done? They blew out Miami, but so did FSU. After that, their best win is Illinois, which is also Mizzou's big win, and no one is respecting Mizzou either. Auburn comes in at #8 for their big win over SC, and pretty good wins over Clemson and Kentucky. Stanford doesn't have any top 25 wins, but they have beaten USC, UCLA, and Notre Dame... hardly a bunch of chumps. And their loss is a good one. Yes, I rank Bama ahead of SC, so hear me out. Alabama has beaten Arkansas and Florida, both top 25 squads. They also crushed Penn St, though that might not mean much anymore. SC has the Bama win and then nothing unless we're propping up Georgia. Bama has the better overall resume than the Cocks. We're not ranking teams based off of one game.
11-15. Nebraska's best win is an overrated K-State team. Play a team with a pulse. I think I'm overrating Wisconsin right now, but we'll have a good gauge for them against Arizona when they play Iowa. Utah's still undefeated and the Pitt win has lost any of its luster.
16-20. Mizzou's schedule is pretty terrible, but they are unbeaten. Iowa's best win is Penn St, but they played Arizona tough. Florida St now has the Miami win though BYU now impresses no one. Arkansas' best win is Texas A&M and playing Alabama close. Michigan has some decent wins, but no marquee scalps. Beating Notre Dame ain't what it once was.
21-25. Oregon St finally gets a quality win (Arizona), so they are back in the poll despite two losses to top 6 teams. Oklahoma St's schedule is embarrassing. Flat out criminal. NCSU has some decent conference wins and they went OOC to beat Cincinnati. Florida's lost to two top ten teams, but they need to start winning some games. Kentucky doesn't cut it. Air Force rounds out the poll for being frighteningly close to being unbeaten.
