Zach Mettenberger Commits!
Worst kept secret in college football, but Mettenberger made it official today. And the angels sing. Can you hear the hallelujah chorus?
We need LSUFreek for a Mettenberger in purple wings and gold halo (a la our previous savior who forsook us, Zach Lee).
I now expect LSU's offense to go from bottom 4th to no. 1 overall with Mettenberger putting up 5,000 passing yards, 50+ TDs, 0 INTs. What, it happened for Auburn?
Update:BayouBengalsInsider.com has a telephone interview with him from this morning up in their free section.

Yeah, where is LSUFreek with those purple wings and halo he put on Lee this Summer already ;)
Welcome aboard Zach! Light those secondaries up when you get the chance.

Just kidding. We will still need JJ and JL though as backups and to possibly, maybe, split time with Mett at the beginning of the year.
HOT OFF THE PRESS
Metz-n-Jesus just scored a TD against the Ducks next year.
Shit, this kid is good.

OUCH, NCAA releases JJ's text message...
Looks like JJ is more competitive than I thought, apparently he is working to beat out Metz-n-tana:
If he bothers you, I’ll take care of him.

He’ll never be a pro-style QB again….because his weight displacement goes back…all his weight is on his right foot…and he’ll throw everything off to the right. He’ll never come through on anything. He’ll quit the game.”
JJ: “That would work? I need your help.”

Great news
Question: Does this make it more or less likely that Crowton is gone? Did Mett commit because he wanted to play under Crowton, or because he was fairly sure someone new would come in – or does the OC not matter that much to a QB? (I would assume it does)
Not sure what it says about Crowton...
There was a poster on TD a few months back claiming Zach strongly favored LSU and that he had been told Crowton would retire after this year to spend time with family.
I generally don’t buy that kinda stuff though. And Gary’s recent comments about he intends to be back next year wouldn’t seem to back up that sentiment.
yeah
I don’t buy the internet posters, or comments from embattled coaches. What else is Gary going to say? If Miles wants to get a new OC, I imagine that the only thing that could stop him would be the AD.
Mettenberger stats and article
Mettenberger’s official stats for his JUCO year are:
2,678 yards and 32 touchdowns on 176-of-299 passing, no tally on INTs.
the info comes from this reasonably interesting article here.
at the very least, he doesn’t come across like a douchebag.

The nice thing is this guy has the confidence we need. Hell, if he can watch our tapes and think “hell yes, I can make that offense look fucking average” then he has the swagger we need.
If he thought, “holy shit, that train wreck just needs a QB to win a few crystal balls” then we could be in great shape for 2 years.
I still hate that we have to rely on a kid GA had to kick off for what I like to call “Thursday”, but welcome to the new NCAA.

Crwoton is key
I heard from a contact that Crowton was key to the recruiting. Apparently Miles brought Crowton to Metz-n-Jesus’ home and said, “do you see the crazy MoFo…take a good look…cause he won’t be on the sidelines when you hit campus!” Crowton was happy to do it for his $500K buyout.

So what's your explanation for our offense in 2007?
I think we were ranked in the top 25 for total offense that year.
I’m not a Crowton apologist by any means, but to say Mett couldn’t improve our O at all if Crowton stays I think is short sighted. We were ranked in the 90’s this year in total offense. I bet Mett alone could pump us to the 60’s despite Crowton…

But he wasn’t calling the plays…
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
Agreed, but the QB development was pretty key when you consider the starters.
I don’t think Matt Flynn had the raw talent of Lee. But years of grooming made him NFL-backup quality. Calling plays is only one of an OC’s many roles, and arguably not the most important. I think you could argue that against many teams a plain vanilla offense with well coached better talent is enough. To win championships, I would agree, you need to reach a higher level to keep the D off balance. But hell, last year O’Bama did not try to fool anybody.

If Mett wins the starting job...
Is there any reason to not redshirt JJ (assuming he’s up for it…)?
It seems like we’d want him to be our backup QB in 2012, or change positions to Safety…
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
I think Lee transfers
As bad as JJ was for most of the year, if Lee couldn’t beat him out this year, he has to think he’s going to be third string next year, whether Mett wins the starting job or not.
I think Lee will go to a D2 school since he can’t sit out a year. If he’s in position to graduate he could take advantage of the Masoli exemption and transfer as a graduate student somewhere.

I have zero inside information
but I’m basing my opinion on the report that Miles told Dak Prescott that he would have 4 scholarship QBs next year. JJ+JL+Mett+Rivers = 4 already, and they’re still recruiting Dak Prescott and Teddy Bridgewater, so I would expect some attrition.
LSU - "...the defense you want to be and your girl wants to be with."

by Billy Gomila on Dec 7, 2010 12:01 PM CST up reply actions
Right.
Most people think Rivers is a grey shirt candidate.
My question is…Why would Lee transfer now? Does he think he has a legit shot at the NFL? Would transferring and playing at Middle-of-Nowhere St. really prepare him for the NFL more than sitting the bench at LSU?
I think Lee likes LSU. I think Lee likes Les Miles. If not he’d have transfered a year or two ago. I just don’t understand what Lee would have to gain by transferring.
JJ on the other hand…I could see transferring…At least he has the option of transferring to another D1 program since he hasn’t burned his redshirt year yet…But my question is the same. Does JJ really think he has a shot at playing QB in the NFL? The guy is no more of an NFL QB prospect than I am.
JJ’s best shot at legit playing time at LSU will come if he is the back-up QB in 2012 after an injury to the starter. Or he could learn a new position either imediately or after taking a redshirt to learn it.
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
Further,
I don’t want Lee to transfer. I couldn’t have been happier for that kid when he threw the winning TD vs Florida this year or threw the game icing completion in the Bama game.
Lee will always be one of my favorite Tigers for sticking with it and ultimately having some redemption on the field.

Its really important to remember
Mett’s not gonna just get handed the starting job, and he shouldn’t be. You’d be sending a really bad message to the team pulling that before they all even practice together, and you paint yourself into the corner of the new guy absolutely having to be extremely successful.
How the whole situation plays out, including the offensive coordinator spot, is going to be extremely interesting to watch over the first couple of months of 2011.

I'm not suggesting or even insinuating that Mett will be "handed" the job.
The first line of my first post:
If Mett wins the starting job…
Will Mett win the job after Bowl practices? Doubtful…But I’m pretty confident that he’ll win the job eventually. But that is another point as to why I doubt Lee transfers. Mett may not win the job until after it is too late for Lee to transfer anyway.
But it won’t be too late for JJ to take a redshirt.
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
Sorry, didn't mean to say that you were
Just saying, its all going to play out, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the only attrition is the rumored greyshirt.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
Completely agree.
I just think it is more likely that JJ transfers over Lee since he still has his redshirt to fall back on and therefore can play 1 year at a D1 school. I don’t think either will or should transfer though.
I do think JJ should think about using his redshirt at LSU to either learn a new position or to be the primary backup in 2012 in the event that Mett wins the starting job.
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
disagree on JJ using RS
i dont’ think he could contribute at other positions. Also, i want our DB coaches spending team developing players who might actually contribute.
Lee should wear 18
That is, if Richard doesn’t get another year of eligibility
Like a Cam Newton - Kodi Burns situation?
hadn’t really thought of that. If he can succesfully make the transition to H-back or something similar, I wonder if that wouldn’t really give Crowton too many toys to play with?
by haveagreatday on Dec 7, 2010 12:28 PM CST up reply actions
Kodi Burns is exactly who I was thinking of.
Burns took a backseat to Chris Todd, not Newton, but yeah, you get what I’m saying…That kid has earned the respect of his entire team and fan base for his sacrifice.
If Kodi Burns goes on to graduate from Auburn and gets into the real estate business or something, he’ll enjoy a long and easy career. Fans don’t quickly forget stuff like that.
Jefferswag should take notes of Burns’ career. Neither had a future in the NFL as a QB…
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
I would not blame Lee if he transfers
I think he has NFL potential in his arm. But no team will take a chance on him without a resume of making completions to show he has an NFL head – and that I’m not sure of. If he is in a 3-way battle for time next year he will never get the reps he needs to demonstrate he growth.
I think he could have a shot at the next level if he lit it up at a FCS (?, whatever D1 is now) school. Look at all the QBs from little schools. They just want a gunslinger capable of reading a D, and he has that potential.
I don’t think JJ does. (Not to be mean.)
I selfishly want Lee to stay as he is very capable backup, but that is kind of greedy. No way in hell JJ agrees to redshirt. The kid thinks he is a solid SEC QB.

He has two of the key needs for a NFL QB
1) Snap ball release and 2) good placement to hit receivers in stride. Now, that is when he is on. Granted, when he is off, holly crap it is a train wreck. But if he got to a place he could have 5 good games in row with sharp passes hitting guys in stride, I think he gets an undrafted-contract shot.
I agree, if he stays at LSU he has zero chance at the next level as I don’t expect much improvement from him – history has taught us that much. How much can you show when you are forced to relive your worst nightmare every time you line up.

JJ has been playing a lot better the last three games.
I would assume he has the inside track for the starting job being a senior and we will see how things go in the Spring, but we will need both JJ and JLee for back-ups/in case of injury if Mett wins the starting job—I hope Lee sticks around. I guess most have heard about Hill decommitting, takes me by surprise a little, but maybe he is looking at the backs we have and Hilliard coming also.
