Russell Shepard, the No. 1-rated high school quarterback in the nation in 2009, will no longer work primarily at quarterback for LSU, coach Les Miles said today.

"He's all at wide receiver and in his mind," Miles said during a pre-spring practice briefing with reporters in the football facility. "He'll get ball handling and running back play as a sidelight to his receivers position."

LSU moves Russell Shepard to wide receiver-Shreveport Times

Look I know we have rules about posting things from a certain Shreveport Times Columnist who we all hate. But this is too big to pass on. At worst, we have another reason to dislike him.

EDIT: More Position changes to be unveiled tomorrow:

Eugene to Safety

Duplessis to LB

Calhoun to CB

Clement to TE

Mingo to DE

He called the Intimidator the "Terminator"

In a column last week. Fucking tard.

Anyway I’m pretty sure that this was imminent. The good thing about Shep is that I think he would play any position he could if it would help the team. You cannot have too many players like that. I’m positive he’ll excel at any role he’s asked to play.

Sheppard moving is expected

If Jefferson and Lee are on the 2-deep (as much as folks hate Lee, he is talented), then Sheppard has a tough time cracking it. Sheppard is so fast you have to get him on the field somehow.

Eugene moving to Safety is a good thing, thats where he belongs.

Garrett

I think it has more to do with Garrett rocketing up the depth chart than the two guys already there. Shep is fourth on the depth chart at QB, third on the chart at WR. This is not difficult math for a player.

I have a hunch we’ll be talking a lot about these moves in the coming weeks. But, for today… BASKETBALL WON!!!! WOOOOO!!!!!!!

Eugene to Safety?

Really?

I guess Les is more impressed with jai’s run stopping ability than Gomila.

Does this mean Mo Clo is impressing?

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 8:07 AM CST reply actions

Just cross-training him

Since Karnell Hatcher may miss spring with an injury. Doubt he winds up starting there, at least not full-time.

We thought Ron Brooks was a starting safety this time last year too.

True.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 8:49 AM CST up reply actions

He's going to free safety

So if he plays the same way Chavis had Jones playing last year, he’ll be 30 yards from the line of scrimmage and shouldn’t have to worry about making too many tackles. I agree with DrB though, I think Eugene will fit in a lot better at safety.

I wish this weren’t so funny…And true.

At least Sheppard is going to play

The QB situation still stinks.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

by Ace Venom on Feb 25, 2010 8:14 AM CST reply actions

Don't poopoo the QB until the O-line proves they can block...

I think a lot of our offensive problems will magically fix themselves one the O-line shows up for a game.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 8:16 AM CST up reply actions

One more thing.

On TD.com some are talking like Peterson back to WR is a done deal…Anyone know anything on that? It doesn’t matter, he’s going to be a beast no matter where he lines up. Between Tolliver, Randle, Shep, and Peterson, I’d hate to have to defend those guys…

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 8:27 AM CST reply actions

My understanding

Is that will depend on how Chase Clement makes the transition to TE. It looks like if he can be the full-time starter, they move Peterson back to WR, if not, Peterson will be the receiving TE and Clement the blocker.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 25, 2010 8:34 AM CST up reply actions

Good question.

Joseph was pretty bad last year…he may move on. Edwards is just going to be a sophomore so still plenty of time for him to contribute.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 25, 2010 9:05 AM CST up reply actions

They mentioned Edwards in the mix for FB last year

I guess that never panned out? With Worle coming in and the kid from Tenn that we got last year (Allen?) who was a little over weight maybe we’ll be set at FB this year?

I think it is possible that with a much improved O-line and a solid FB that this offense could really hum. Although you can say that for pretty much any team in the league save for Vandy… But really don’t think JJ is the problem, and Crowton, well, that is still a mystery in my opinion. If Miles really thought Crowton was the problem it seems like he’d have been gone.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

While its true

That no play’s going to work with a bad o-line, Crowton had more than just baffling play calls. He had baffling entire games.

Just have to see what happens. Crowton’s offense tend to get worse over time at most places, but on the other hand, he’s never really been anywhere long enough to show if he can turn it around. He gets his chance this year.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 25, 2010 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

Well maybe Crowton is just incapable of hiding a poor offensive line. I'm sure there are plenty of D1 O-coords out there that would love for that to be their only deficiency...

I agree he had bad entire games, but if the guy’s system simply doesn’t work with a bad Oline then where do you point the finger? Crowton doesn’t coach the Oline and he doesn’t have many recruiting responsibilities. Seems like there are too many problems to lay all the blame on Crowton.

I’m not sticking up for Crowton as much as I am stating my displeasure with the whole offensive side of the coaching staff from 2009.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

LSU has 12 players going to the combine

and top 5 recruiting classes the past year(s.). You have to wonder what’s going on with the coachs. Last year on offense and the year before on defense. Don’t want to get too negative cause Southern Man will take offense, but…………….

by bcooper on Feb 25, 2010 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

My motto is:

Never be too negative during preseason football. There’s plenty of time to be negative during the season after you have conclusive proof that the team sucks.

We should all be cautiously optimistic this time of the year.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Haha speaking of which

Has anyone seen Southern Man lately? It seems quiet without him.

by Ianoka on Feb 25, 2010 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

I was missed – Mikeno will not be pleased!

Been busy, had some employees that tried to relocate company assets to their bank account.

The good news is that plenty of people are looking for their jobs and they have been eager to ‘work it out’ since the prisons in NC are not overcrowded.

not offended

I just think it shows how much potential we have if we can improve on the line and under center, both of which I expect to happen.

2010 is the Chinese year of the Tiger, I’m sold!

I agree about the O line

And another thing may be Jefferson’s grasp of the offense last year. We were criticized for being bland. Let me say that again: a Crowton offense was criticized for being bland. That never happens. Usually everyone complains about him getting too cute and too tricky, which makes me wonder how much of the playbook was installed.

by Ianoka on Feb 25, 2010 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

The problem

Wasn’t that the offense was bland. It was that it tried to do too many different things while not doing any one thing well. There wasn’t enough of a pattern to call things “bland.”

Please do not dredge up the “conservative” debate.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 25, 2010 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Is that the Poseur Signal?

My argument was, and is, that the coaching staff was paralyzed by its desire to reduce risk this season. In fact, they were so risk averse, that was what caused the offense to flounder as all they were trying to do is not turn the ball over: mission accomplished. It only came at the cost of a functional offense.

Way too conservative. We reduced turnovers at the cost of yards, points, time of possession, and the use of the middle of the field.

I don’t want to be accused of being the negative nancy of the damn website.

NEXT YEAR IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!!!

by LSU Jonno on Feb 25, 2010 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sorry

But there wasn’t enough of a pattern to even call what Crowton tried to do conservative. Conservative might have actually worked better.

It wasn’t even remotely risk-averse. The problem was a lack of managed risk.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 25, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Haha oh yes, now I remember

And I think I have to side with Poseur on this one. Regardless of what you say, the offense definitely WAS criticized for being too bland, at least early in the season. We also definitely didn’t go deep nearly as much as previous seasons, there were also many articles written on that. There was also the lack of use of Shepard, another example of vanilla offense. Yes, we didn’t do anything well, but we didn’t exactly lay out the whole playbook either.

by Ianoka on Feb 25, 2010 11:36 PM CST up reply actions

Doesn't mean

That criticism was a correct assessment. It wasn’t.

People say the offense was bland because its easy to say.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 26, 2010 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

I'm with Billy on this one.

And that is the first time I think I’ve ever said that.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 26, 2010 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

An offense

Can try to do a lot of different things and still be conservative. I see your point, and I think the thing is you have to start with the basic plays (aka bland) to set up everything else, and so Crowton went to a lot of different sets and formations to try and find one where the basic plays worked. They never did, so he could never move on to the more complex, high reward type plays that we especially saw in 07.

by Ianoka on Feb 27, 2010 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

Calhoun

Did he suddenly acquire CB hips? I thought they tried him there last spring and he wasn’t very good. Is this just to get him a spot b/c he wasn’t going to see PT at RB with Ridley + Murphy + Ford + new kids?

by amiznit on Feb 25, 2010 10:25 AM CST reply actions

Calhoun

I believe they were looking at him real hard at CB and liked what they saw. Plus he didn’t see much PT because he was on the depth chart behind peterson.

by tkemz939 on Feb 25, 2010 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

I..

don’t think Shep will win the slot job.

Regardless of his official position, Shep will remain our “option” player. I doubt he will be catching many passes or going out on routes for that matter. More times than not he will be taking a hand-off wherever he may be lined up. I just don’t believe he has the hands to be an every down receiver.

by Mikeno on Feb 25, 2010 1:21 PM CST reply actions

If the offense adopts

A role similar to what Florida used Harvin for, Shepard probably won’t be asked to catch more than 20-30 passes anyway.

by Billy Gomila on Feb 25, 2010 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

If..

he reaches that many catches then my doubts about his hands would seem unfounded. I hope so. More times than not though I see C. Toliver or DPete spending more time in the slot.

I don't remember Shep dropping any passes.

It was AFTER he caught the ball that we had to worry about his hands…
