Chris Garrett Leaving LSU
Tigerbait.com is reporting that 3rd-string, redshirt freshman QB Chris Garrett is leaving the LSU football program.
Garrett was recently notified that his scholarship would not be renewed. More on this story as it unfolds.
From an immediate perspective, LSU is now at the 85 scholarship limit. This also may speak to Zach Lee's future at LSU and the coaches confidence in his ability.

it says there now that
“Garrett had a meeting with Miles on Wednesday and asked for his release. Miles granted Garrett his release”.
Apparently, Miss State is the only SEC school he can transfer to.
Jrlz rhymes with Charles.
I don't think he "did" anything...
He just got dropped like a rock.
It’s an ugly business sometimes.
I've heard he was timid, and he didn't like taking reps in the spring game.
not the quality you want in a QB.

i couldnt agree more.
while the thought of a gap at qb is frightening, the thought of bambi as qb is equally as frightening.
Not a fan of this move
at all.
If we needed a scholarship, there are other players at other positions that probably could have been let go. ZLee better be in a yellow helmet in the fall and he better not suck.
I find this very confusing and troubling..
the qb situation is the stuff of nightmares. Miles & Co. better know what they’re doing.
Also, I absolutely loved Chris Garrett as a prospect when he was being recruited. It seems like such a strange thing for him to go this quickly if it was truly just a “you’re not good enough to play” situation. I wish the kid the best.
Father. Husband. Lawyer. Nerd.
I'm with you Pitt.
Miles & Co. better know what they’re doing.
But it is time to stop giving Les the benefit of the doutb. It this works out in our favor in some odd twist of events where Zach Lee is the second coming of Rohan Davey, fine. But it ain’t going to be because this was all part of Miles’ master plan.
I’m tired of Miles pissing all over the fans and telling us it’s raining.
“This is the best O-line we’ve had at LSU” – Les Miles, 2009
I missed the time you gave Miles the benefit of the doubt
I mean, you’re not one of his bigger fans and never have been (at least on this site). Which is fine, I like having all sides of the argument, but I find it hard to believe that you’ve lost faith considering you never had it in the first place.
That said, I’m pretty ticked by this news. There’s almost no way to positively spin this if true. I don’t care about the o-line quote at all as he said it in preseason. He was wrong. Whatever. I don’t really care what coaches say to the media when hyping the program in the preseason. I do care about the redshirt freshman starter of the future leaving the program. That is doubleplusungood.

Even if it was a mutual parting of ways
The timing’s just bad. Zach Lee is officially your third string quarterback now and he’s not guaranteed to even be here this fall.
QB depth
It’s been the Achilles Heel of Miles’ tenure. More than anything else, even clock management, the QB situation has been an adventure. And not in a good way.

Yup
And frankly this group of QB recruits in general (and I’ll defer to Paul Crew if he disagrees) just doesn’t impress me. At least as far as there being some savior out there.
The Class In General
Re: QBs, is very, very solid.
Unfortunately, LSU has missed out on a ton. Now, could some guys flip? Let’s hope so.
Miles had the benefit of the doubt with me until the Ms St. game in 2009.
That’s when I knew that Miles was probably not the coach that I thought he was. I’ve defended the man for 5 years on other fans’ sites.
When I come here I want to offer up what I consider to be a “call it like I see it” opinion and get feedback. I try not to be biased for or against Miles. I think the fact that i am not optimistic leads many on this site to think that makes me pessimistic, and I don’t think that is the case. I like to think I’m in the middle. It’s just that lately, there seems to me more reason for concern than for optimism. I don’t ever blindly critisize the guy, i offer an opinion based on fact and based on what I think is the current direction of the program. I’ve always backed up my opinion with facts though. Could I be wrong? Of course! Do I wish I was wrong? Hell yes I do. But I don’t think that I am.
The reason that I brought up the O-line comment is that isn’t typical coach speak in my opinion. There are plenty of positive things that Miles could have said to pump up the fans for last year’s team. How about, “our defense is on the same page this year”. Or “the players are working harder”, or “as coaches we are doing somethings differently”. Or some other vague statement that couldn’t be held against him after the season. The fact that he specifically said “This will be our best O-line” when in fact it was probably our worst during his tenure led me to believe that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’d much rather the coach tell me “The O-line needs some work”. How can you be so wrong about such a vital aspect of the team? All of that to say, whatever comes out about the Garrett story, I’m way more inclined to believe what I hear from Chris’ family than coach Miles.
And you're a valuable part of the community
I didn’t want it to sound like I was trying to run you off or even that I discredit your opinion. I don’t. But I do view you as someone who has already lost faith in the coaching staff, so saying that you’re going to stop giving Miles the benefit of the doubt rang sorta of hollow. I think you’ve already reached that point.
That said, I completely agree this is bad news and awful roster management. At this point, come the 2012 season, we are staying at QB depth of a former walk-on, a baseball pitcher who is no lock to even be in school, and whoever we can sign from now until then. That’s a sobering thought.

No, you're right.
Like I said, I pretty much gave up on these guys after the State game last year. Maybe that was too early to push the panic button, but it made the Ole Miss debacle easier to swallow.
I guess when I said “it’s time to stop giving these guys the benefit of the doubt” I was more referring to whatever statement it is that they are going to release. I just feel like I’d put more weight on what Chris says than the coach.
Re: O-line Comment
OU’s OC said the exact same stuff about their offensive line going into last year. They shuffled starters about 20 times.
Article just says that he is unhappy at not being able to compete
for Jarrett Lee’s #2 spot and not gettin reps in the spring game and practice.
Whats the rumor as to why he was unhappy?
Rumors out of Spring ball were that he was tentative and "didn't want to compete"
This whole situation sounds fishy.
That could be LSU SID spin
or that could be the truth. Who knows.
Seems to be 2 camps
One says it was a mutual parting of ways. The other says his family was angry at alleged comments Miles made about Garrett in a booster meeting (i.e. the timid thing).
If the whole timid conversation thing did take place...
Which I can’t really blame Chris for if it did (after seeing how J. Lee turned out) I wouldn’t be happy with Miles to be calling me out infront of a bunch of fans either. These are probably the same fans who got their jollies off by booing J. Lee. I wouldn’t want them to have a negative opinion of me just because I don’t feel like I’m ready to play the QB position for a top D1 program because we have a QB coach that doesn’t know how to develop a QB.
Yeah I don't get why he would do it either
Especially with the way LSU’s depth chart sits right now and Zach Lee’s uncertain status. Supposedly it was at the Shreveport Tiger Tour stop, but I’ve yet to read anybody who has first-hand verified it.
I do know that Saban would do these types of things but that’s why he doesn’t let media anywhere near those meetings. And when he did it with Lester Ricard, he had Jamarcus Russell and Matt Flynn on campus, so it wasn’t quite the same situation.
Oy.
There is no way that Garrett is any appreciable amount worse than J. Lee
I’m not trying to bash Lee, I’ve supported the guy for 3 years, but he doesn’t seem to have “it”. The guy couldn’t throw on La Tech last year.
I’m not saying that Garrett should start and I’m not saying that Garrett should move into second string. All I’m saying is that I find it really hard to believe that Garrett has no shot at making a name for himself at LSU. Because the guys in front of him aren’t that good and they are two years older than him.
I get the feeling that Miles was really behind J Lee when he was having problems and encouraged him to stick with the team and practice and improve. That doesn’t seem to be happening in this case. There just seems to be more to this story.
I don't find it that hard to believe
But again, just for depth purposes, I would rather Garrett at least stay on for this year.
More rumors that Garrett was told Zach Lee was pulling ahead of him in summer 7-on-7. Which isn’t totally bad news — but you better be damn sure Zach Lee sticks around…

Jarrett Lee
I’ve been one of his bigger defenders, particularly through his “Pick Six” games, but he just looks so beaten out there. I just think he is just not prepared to play mentally. Or at least he wasn’t last time we saw him. Maybe he’s gotten over it.

I'll add this
With it being reported that Garrett was released to Mississippi State, that tends to indicate that this was a mutual parting. But even if the coaches were sure that Garrett would never be able to take over, I still disagree with the timing of this.
Have you guys forgotten about Barrett Bailey?
He was a 3-star QB who chose to be a preferred walk-on at LSU over some real D 1A offers. It might not be much, but it is depth.
Jrlz rhymes with Charles.
God, can't the season begin before I have to hear any more of this speculation?
Jrlz rhymes with Charles.
Am I a typical fan in thinking that we've had more QB situations than other schools?
RP, Lee, Jefferson…all with issues either personal or in development. We have been a top 5 program, and it’s like we can’t get it right.
I think its also important to remember that we still have Shepard if we need to move him back…which of course still speaks of problems we have at QB.
Jefferson
Aside from a bad spring game, I’m mystified why everyone has turned on Jefferson. He had a stat line almost identical to McElroy’s last season. He was only a sophomore and he seemed exactly where he should be on the developmental curve.
It’s like people are mad he wasn’t Bert Jones right away.

People have unrealistic expectations
and they believe that the player will be the same tomorrow as he is today. Jefferson played about as well as I thought he would (if not better) as a true sophomore. That doesn’t mean I think he’s is perfect. There are several things he has to work on, but that’s true of every young player.
Secondly, people blame too much on one player. Jefferson cannot be solely blamed for the offenses ineptitude. There are 10+ other players involved along with a few coaches that need to share the blame.
Great post amiznit
Particularly the bit about being the same player you are tomorrow as you are today.
I'll say this
Few teams have as good a QB depth as they appear to from the outside. If John Brantley gets hurt, Florida’s down to true freshmen. Georgia’s QB situation isn’t much better. Even Alabama ran off the only other veteran QB they had besides McElroy.
So it’s not like this is the craziest move on the planet. But people are concerned about the position, so it gets magnified. Again, if this happened after the season (or if we knew for certain Zach Lee was going to be around) I wouldn’t be that worried.
The problem is being magnified by the fact that we were spoiled when we had JR, Flynn and RP all on the team at the same time.
That was ridiculous depth. We’ll likely never see that kind of star power on one team ever again. Welcome to the life of every other college football fan not knowing what they would do if their starting QB went down.
all this negative speculation reminds me why I almost quit like three times
Everybody wants to be negative, the sky is falling, etc.
Optimism is the only way I approach a season, and I wonder how anybody can approach it differently.
Jrlz rhymes with Charles.
I didn't mean it that way
but can’t people calm down? Just say “oh, bummer” and move on.
Jrlz rhymes with Charles.
This is coming from the guy who texted "REPEAT BITCHES!" to everyone in his phone after the Auburn game in 2008.
To be honest, after the Ole Miss game, this is how I look at it.
Things will get better, or they won’t. If they don’t, changes will come. This is how things work. Personally, I’d rather things work out so change (because you can’t guarantee change will be good) gets avoided.
I guess it’s more fatalistic than optimistic, but I think it beats just being miserable about everything and complaining all the time. At a certain point, you’re just not doing any good anymore.
This crap is starting to ruin my day.
Can someone start a thread listing all the reasons that Jefferson is going to be awesome this year?
My argument
1) game experience
2) maturity
3) more practice reps
but most importantly
4) a better OL
