2010 ATVS - Geaux Show Pick'em Challenge

Here's another Geaux Show favorite that we are finally bringing into the 21st century. For the 4th or 5th year, The Geaux Show Pick'em is back to showcase the worst in CFB prognostication. Gone are the days of picks being kept by hand in a massive excel spread sheet. Thanks to the folks at FunOfficePools.com it'll all be automated this year and easy to play.

Rules are simple. Each week we'll pick about a dozen or so games, mostly the SEC slate and Louisiana teams, but also other matchups we find interesting. Picks are due in before noon saturday or before kickoff of the Thursday game when picked. We'll discuss picks on the Mid-week episodes of The Geaux Show and I'll review the results and the selections for the next week every Sunday evening. To play, you'll have to setup an account at www.funofficepools.com, then come back here and click the link below. If you have questions, sound off in the comments.

Remember, these are not straight up picks, but against the spread. I've removed the SEC v 1-AA matchups this week to get a more nationwide set of game to pick.

It may not be their fault, but I don't think Boise's weak schedule plus high preseason ranking should be enough to put them into the NC picture this year. I really think VT comes out ready to stomp them, and should well cover. I am so tempted to pick UConn over Mich. but in the end I don't think RichRod's bad season starts that early. Moo U will win, surely, but 21 points? I want to be proven wrong on Vandy, but Warren Norman's knee problems will hold them back. I will always bet on the Wannstache. USC to win, but Garcia could still be pulled mid-game. I too have bought into the Huskies doing well this year.

Remember Picks are due this week by THURSDAY NIGHT, 6:30pm CST

I'm considering this.

But, honestly, I don’t really understand how the spread works. Care to give a quick rundown?

easy explination

based on the spread number, you are predicting not the winner or loser of the game, but whether or not the favored team can win by the set amount of points.

For example, As the home team, Bama has a spread of -39.5 making them the favored team. Alabama must win by at least 40 to win by this spread. San Jose St. must lose by less than 40 to win spread. By picking Bama, you are predicting that they will win by 40 points or more. If you pick SJ St. you are predicting that they will lose by less than forty points (.

In our game, UNC is designated the home team with a spread of +1.5, which means LSU is the favored team. North Carolina must lose by less than 2 to win by this spread. LSU must win by at least 2 to win spread. If you pick LSU, your are predicting that they will win by 2 points or more. If you pick UNC, you are predicting that they will lose by less than 2 points.
