Here's North Carolina's new depth chart for those of you following along at home. (H/T Big McLargeHuge)

No changes to the list of holdouts, and Carolina March has a profile of what is now UNC's lone offensive weapon, RB Johnny White

Auburn down 6 early.
Arkansas down 3 early.

Final pregame thought

Come out strong, get out in front early. LSU should be able to wear UNC down anyway with this many guys out, and the faster they’re on their heels the faster that happens.

Play well. I don’t care about the score. Play well.

I partially agree

but I think getting cute with the offense, trying to throw in random formations to be confusing is a much bigger issue.

Run for 3, Run for 3, WR flat isn’t a bad series to me, better than throwing in a 5WR set with all deep on 3rd and 3 or 4

plays & possession

Through 1Q, they’ve run 3 more plays, but they’ve had the ball over nine minutes. Not cool. Despite the fact that they got the ball first, the two turnovers should have had more of an impact.

by uberschuck on Sep 4, 2010 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

incompletions shorten ToP

so it’s not totally accurate this quickly. and our second drive after the fumble was pretty quick.

wtf that was a legit tackle he was committed and couldn’t pull back, not a dirty tackle at all.

by ORtigerfan on Sep 4, 2010 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions

that penalty was total BS. I guess hitting a QB while he is approaching the sideline is as bad as hitting him after he’s already out of bounds.

by lawildbull on Sep 4, 2010 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

never said this before

but Jai Eugene made a fine play to take away the intended receiver and stop that third down play from happening. Yates couldn’t throw because Eugene read the play and took away the receiver. Eugene saved us 4 points…but I still feel apprehensive when he’s on the field.

On both of JJ’s TD passes he stood up and took a lick as he delivered. The INT not withstanding (I think he was trying to go out of bounds, but was under too much duress), maybe the light bulb is on…maybe.

by ORtigerfan on Sep 4, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

ok legitimate question about JJ

before this season my favorite JJ pass was the licking he took against Georgia on a pass to Randle in the 3rd quarter. I have seen him make some good passes so far and stay in to take a hit this game. It seems kind of like he’s taken a lot of these last-second shots to deliver these throws. Do you guys think he’s holding on too long and barely getting it off in tiem to our excellent WR corps or do you think he’s holding on for a while, throwing it, and getting lucky?

I can’t figure out if I think the hits he’s taking combined with the throws he’s making are super impressive (THEY ARE) or are actually warning signs of something to come

by ORtigerfan on Sep 4, 2010 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

The issue last year was the offensive line, not JJ

He’s going to be fine this year if the OL gives him decent protection

by The Bengal on Sep 4, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

bit of both

in my opinion but OL was bad last year

by Draco on Sep 4, 2010 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

No, no

I totally agree, our OL hindered our ability last year. what I meant was more of a question to the guys who watch QB play harder than I do. If he holds it too long and is getting lucky then I can understand that. Should I be optimistic? I love when he holds it and makes the necessary play and takes the hit, but I don’t want to see him holding it too long and taking the hit because he can’t find the open receiver. that’s my worry

I believe

he is showing maturity standing in, and the coaches have loosened the tethers on him since he has shown such improvement, not in technique, but in eperience.

Discussion this week

1. Special teams victory for LSU
2. Decimated UNC team outplayed LSU everywhere else.

by lawildbull on Sep 4, 2010 10:09 PM CDT reply actions

No.

I was at the UW game last year. Their yardage looked great and all and everyone said they outplayed us but they didn’t. They never had the ball in the 4th quarter with a chance to tie it. Every possession was to draw within KOS-to-tie range.

We haven’t been outplayed. We have hit a slump after a great stretch. Our slump stretched into the D, we hit an unfortunate flag, and they think it’s now a game. It’s not a game. We still win, just watch.

every nfl team ever

goes for half the yards on 3rd and long. If you go for the full amount or the deep pass (when you don’t need it) you tend to get hurt. The common, conservative play is to go for half the yards you need and either your WR makes the play or you punt. Punting isn’t anathema to college football

by Draco on Sep 4, 2010 11:01 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think so.

Two long pass plays accounted for a plurality of their game. No excuse for those plays, but just two plays. Their first TD came from a drive kept alive by two personal fouls, one of which was on the punt (i.e. the defense got the stop). What they kept killing us with was the plays to the tight end. We had nothing on that. Chavis made a great call on the blitz that forced a fumble late in the game.

I suppose it’s already chiseled in stone that we lucked our way to a win we didn’t deserve because we pissed away a lead to a handicapped team who would have won if it hadn’t been for an uncalled pass interference on the last play. But that’s woulda coulda shoulda talk.

Bottom line, we won. And despite what Lou Holtz just said, UNC would trade places with us. Hell, the guys at Red Cup Rebellion wish they could be Tigers all the time, but they just don’t say it. Today they might actually admit they’d like to be suffering through the outcome of our game.

Won't Get Fooled Again

More talent, same bad coaching. Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, hell maybe even Miss St could beat us this year. I’ll watch and i’ll scream at Croton and Miles and maybe LSU will have a quarterback and a new staff by next year. You don’t throw for 4 yards on a 3rd and 6. You don’t pull the blitz when your backfield leaks like a sieve. You don’t put in third string players at the start of the 3rd quarter, i don’t care how big a lead you have. But hell i was there when Charlie Mac was there and he was even worse.

UNC Game

Conservative game plans are for second rate teams. We have a coaching staff who follows a conservative game plan. Therefore, we have a second rate coaching staff. No excuses. Run-run-pass, run-run-pass… Everyone in the stadium knows what we are going to do before it happens. This will be a very long season if something doesn’t change. As always, our great players do their best. With the right direction, they could dominate. Kudos to them for fighting hard despite a lousy game plan and predictable play calling. The onside kick call was absurd. Contact before the ball goes ten yards is illegal. At the end of the day, we are 1and 0. Bring on the power house, Vandy!

The stuff I liked (aside from the final score)

1) I already mentioned JJ throwing TD passes in the nick of time before a big hit. Upperclassman play.
2) Our quick throws to the tight end. We got good yardage twice or thrice on that.
3) Sacks. Last year was a lean year. We had a few good ones.
4) On that note, Nevis was an animal. There are few things I love more than an LSU DT who can control a game. Lavalais. Dorsey. Can Nevis possibly play like he did in the first half (not that his second half sucked) repeatedly?
5) Ruben Randle. Get him the ball more.
6) Peterson deserves his own post.
7) Even the non-Peterson return game was good.
