So....if the Miles train goes off the rails, do you get Boise St's coach?

It seems to me that he has been successful on a smaller school that now can play with big schools with his system and he develops sub-par talent in to bonafide players. Imagine what he can do with LSU's recruiting base and the talent that is already there. He is a helluva coach that knows offense, clock management, and yall should be able to get him for around 3-5 mill a year. Ya'll have the facilities, the talent, and all you need now is a coach who can put it all together. I am a Bama fan, but I hate hearing and watching a fanbase that is as unhappy as LSU's, and I think Les Miles isnt gonna change into a "great" head coach, but will find away to go 8-4 or 9-3 when he should be competing for the SEC every year.It just seems to me that Houston Nutt, Les Miles and Frank Beamer are all cut from the same cloth, which is "I've been doing this so long I can now make this shit up as I go along, who in the hell needs offense?"

Coach Petersen is a smart coach and I bet would unite the fanbase. I spend about 3 days a week in Baton Rouge so I hear the talk radio and I gotta say, its brutal. I am also tired of hearing about Boise St and I think Coach Petersen defecting to a traditional SEC power would end alot of the hoopla.

I don’t believe he will leave Boise St, IMO. He’s very loyal and would probably say when no one else wanted him, the Broncos believed in him enough to make him the HC. I would think that Gary Patterson would have the same sentiments.

If Pete Carroll weren’t so tainted with the post-tenure investigations, I originally would have hoped that he could have pulled a “Saban” and was hired by LSU. Now, not so much.

I really don’t know exactly who I would like to see as HC, as long as they can win and not bring negative attention to the program.

by Studley on Sep 9, 2010 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

i agree

I feel like he wouldn’t leave Boise either, but you never know when money is involved.

I am more impressed w/ the boise state coach than the tcu coach though.

by Zandor435 on Sep 10, 2010 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Why?

TCU actually plays more than one or two teams with a pulse a year.

by Mikeno on Sep 10, 2010 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

let me rephrase

I have seen more of the BSU coach. I haven’t seen as much of TCU. Has TCU been as good as long as BSU? I also assume that TCU has more talent to work w/ than BSU. Do you think that is wrong?

by Zandor435 on Sep 10, 2010 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh...

It’s hard to tell who has more to work with. If I had to say, I’d pick TCU. But up at Boise Peterson plays one or two teams on his schedule with a pulse while able to start 23 and 24 year old men. Everyone redshirts there. And they have the luxury of tweaking things about their team almost all year when they play what most BCS teams would consider creampuffs.

I’m not sold on Peterson. He runs a well coached and prepped squad but, I believe that has more to do with the circumstances that the team gets to play under. Look at all of the coaches who have had success at Boise and then failed to duplicate anywhere close to that after heading other jobs. Of them, Hootin Dale has accomplished the most… should we be knocking on his door. I think not.

And then Patterson would have considerable Texas recruiting ties.

is going to steam on to more championships!

Thanks for the concern though.

SouthernMan is actually Les Miles…Just wanted to clear that up in case you were wondering what this blind optimism was about.

by LSU Jonno on Sep 10, 2010 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

It's too early to think much about that until we see how this season goes

but I think the best candidates if Miles did go would be Harbaugh, Peterson, Patterson, Muschamp, Whittingham, or Fitzgerald (Northwestern). All of them are somewhat longshots to leave their current positions, but that would be the list I’d start working down if there were a theoretical vacancy.

by The Bengal on Sep 9, 2010 7:52 PM CDT reply actions

it's just a matter of time

before that vacancy appears. Nobody wants Miles to succeed more than me, but I think he is on the thinnest of ice. I recognize that he has been super successful over his time at LSU. I also know we’ve had attrition problems and QB problems and asst coach turnover and that our team was actually not all that bad last year despite the perception. BUT, he’s one of the highest paid coaches in CFB (I guess Meyer, Saban, Stoops and maybe Kelly at ND make more. Anybody else I’m not thinking of?) so, while I understand that it is unreasonable to expect perfection every year, I think we have paid for the right to expect to compete for the SEC every year. There is no tenure in CFB. His current salary is a reward for winning the NC (which is totally justified), but it is coupled with the expectation that he will continue to earn that salary with a similar performance. $7mil pays for more than 8-8 in the SEC over two years.

by haveagreatday on Sep 10, 2010 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Or he could just fire Crowton

which, at a minimum, would buy him two more years. 112th in the NCAA in offense? From a program that made the jump to elite status? Unacceptable.

by haveagreatday on Sep 10, 2010 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

This is probably the best statement on Miles that I've seen written.

Miles isn’t a bad coach. He just isn’t elite, and as of now he’s making elite money.

Eventually the school won’t be able to justify his paycheck.

That’s the real problem here.

by LSU Jonno on Sep 10, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree with you here

He’s getting paid like Meyer or Saban, but he’s not quite on their lvel (though that it is a small level). If I’m looking, my search goes about like this….

Call Patterson at TCU. It’s his job if he wants it. If he says no, I decide between Edsall, Muschamp, Sumlin, and Harbaugh (I don’t think Fitzgerald or Riley will leave their jobs). I’m actually really intrigued by Sumlin, though he’d likely be considered am “on the cheap” hire.

I'm only critical of Miles

Because of his paycheck in relation to other coaches who are in his pay grade.

Miles get’s paid like a top 5 coach. But we haven’t finished in the top 5 since Pelini left. Now Nebraska looks like a top 15 team/maybe top 10 team on their way to a top 5 team. I don’t think that is a coincidence.

by LSU Jonno on Sep 12, 2010 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think firing Crowton gets him two years

Remember, he made the decision to keep Crowton for this year. If the offense tanks again this year, he can buy one more year at most by dumping Crowton. 2011 will be produce or go.

by The Bengal on Sep 10, 2010 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Frank Beamer

I don’ t think Beamer belongs in that category. His teams aren’t exciting, but they always play very good D and solid special teams. Despite not having the same kind of talent that most of the SEC schools have I think Va Tech has a very good program…and i think that is b/c of their coaching.

by Zandor435 on Sep 10, 2010 10:00 AM CDT reply actions

If the..

unwanted does happen, I would like the first calls to be made to Wittingham, Muschamp, & Patterson. Other notable names would be Skip Holtz and Randy Edsall. I only mentioned coaches I believe could be pulled from their current jobs.

I would rather LSU not have to be in that situation though.

by Mikeno on Sep 10, 2010 10:59 AM CDT reply actions

Dan Mullen?

I think it is clear that he was the key to UF’s offense. They haven’t been the same since he left….and he has an under manned MSU team playing much better.

by Zandor435 on Sep 10, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Jury still out on Mullen

But I’d agree the early returns look good.

Patterson and Peterson are my first two at this point. Mullen would probably be in my top 10 but not top 5 yet.

by LSU Jonno on Sep 10, 2010 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree

He needs to do more with his perennial doormat before I’m prepared to jump on that train.

by The Bengal on Sep 10, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah..

it’s inconclusive at this point, but he looks to be a good one. He opened mouth and inserted foot though, by claiming MSU was going to make it to ATL.

by Mikeno on Sep 10, 2010 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Well..

I guess he left it vague enough that he can have deniability, but I think most would think he wanted the MSU fanbase to read into it.

by Mikeno on Sep 11, 2010 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

He said MSU would have a "championship team"

You can win the “egg bowl championship” and win the “X Bowl Championship” without winning an SEC West Championship.

by LSU Jonno on Sep 12, 2010 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions

You be the judge....

3:00 minute mark.

:dunno:

And even if he didn’t have that tidbit, there were plenty of other slim chance guarantees in there to go around.

I absolutely go with Harbaugh.

The last two years they have beaten the crap out of USC and UCLA. Stanford kicking the crap out of USC and UCLA. Just let that sink in for a moment. Stanford kicking the crap out of USC and UCLA. Stanford thinking Rose Bowl. Stanford.

Now close your eyes and imagine for a moment…that kind of coaching with 5 star talent…yes, I know, football is fun again…it’s wonderful…I know, our QBs are really playing well, like Andrew Luck…I know, wow…

by TigerTex on Sep 12, 2010 6:07 PM CDT reply actions

Pipe dream..

I don’t think many in here haven’t given Harbaugh a thought. It’s just that if he were to leave Stanford for a HCing job elsewhere in college football, it would be for the Michigan job. And he has already gone on record saying his has no interest in his Alma Mater, and has also blasted them for their football admissions standard (IIRC).

If he leaves Stanford, it would be for the NFL. It’s written all over his face.

by TigerTex on Sep 14, 2010 2:50 PM CDT reply actions

Salty?

I guess I was mistaken that the OP was asking a serious question about if Peterson would be our first call. If pipe dreams are our aim, then I would like to throw Bobby Bowden, Mack Brown, Jim Tressel, Nick $aban, Irvin Myer$, Bill Parcells, Bill Belicheat, Lloyd Carr, Jimmy Johnson……………………. names in the hat.

Come on man, your straw men can’t deflect the certainty that Harbaugh has no interest in any other college program.

You were school’d… love it; own it.

Oh him?

my understanding of that situation is that he retired once his player that accepted the snaps from the player that delivered the snaps received a higher calling and left for his mission to bring salvation to the far away league.

He made it clear that his desire was to have quality time; that is time that has quality to it with his family. What happens with that situation is you have to know what’s most important and we value those things; your family, your daughter who would be so happy to have her daddy back.

After an appropriate time interval, that’s an amount o time that appropriately passes, I think it was almost two days in this case, he realize that she could suck it up and now he’s back.

We, this team, this staff, we look forward to competing and preparing to give it our finest effort. We’ll certainly have a want to finish in front of the second place team in that contest.

That wus? We’re gonna beat the wishy washy swamp water out of that punk.

I would say Harbaugh has no interest in any other college program

like I would say Nick Saban didn’t have any interest in any other college program when he seemed to be enjoying himself down in Miami.

He may very well not be interested. And Muschamp may really like a cool place like Austin and running one of the premier programs in America within the next 3-5 years. And Petersen may really like staying at a place where he can dominate the locals and occasionally pull the upset.

So what I’m saying is, the whole post is about dreaming about bringing in the absolutely best candidate should it come to that. And I hear Harbaugh’s name thrown around by people a lot smarter than me, so I wouldn’t say its totally unreasonable.

by TigerTex on Sep 15, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Alright man..

I’m not one to try and dash anyone’s dreams but, don’t try to pass Harbaugh off as a likely candidate, or more appropriately, as likely as anyone else; case can be made blah blah. The man BLASTED HIS OWN ALMA MATER. He couldn’t give a shit about LSU. BTW, Peterson is as close as there is to a dead-end too, and I think he is a poor candidate myself.

In other Harbaugh news……

Chucky

I think you would have to at least talk to Jon Gruden. LSU is the kind of program that might be able to lure him into the college ranks and away from MNF. He’s a solid coach, won a Super Bowl, would probably be able to recruit well, and he’s good buddies with local hero Sean Payton.

Might be a stretch, but I think he could be successful in the sense that Carroll and Saban were coming back from the NFL into college.
