Why I hate Nick Saban and like Erik Gee and Matt Hinton

While watching the LSU-Alabama BCSNCG, I was mumbling how much I hate Nick Saban and a friend asked why.

I said, "Imagine that the wife you loved for four years divorces you for a richer guy with a nicer car. Two years later, she leaves him, marries your brother and starts showing up at family gatherings."

He, and everyone else I tell that to, completely understands.

* * *

Why Erik Gee picked LSU as #1:

...since first announcing his decision to stick with LSU in early December. That was right after the BCS blithely ignored two of its unwritten rules -- a team must win its conference championship; the title game shouldn’t be a rematch of a regular-season game -- so Alabama and LSU could meet again in Superdome.

From Matt Hinton:

Presented with both sides of the coin, my instinct is to split that coin down the middle and give each side a half. That's what we used to do, and I think it reflects the reality of the season.

In lieu of that option, I reluctantly picked LSU. For three reasons:

LSU has a more complete resumé.

Every game counts.

LSU won the SEC championship.

I don't see how Alabama winning the BCS shows that every game doesn't count.

The Nov. 5 game did count. It very nearly kept Bama out of the BCS championship. It sent LSU to the SEC championship. But in 2011 college football doesn’t award a championship for the regular season. You get a national championship for winning the BCS championship game, which is supposed to pit the two best teams against each other. So yea, the Nov. 5 game did count. So did the OSU loss to 6-7 Iowa State. And Stanford’s Loss to Oregon. And Boise’s loss to TCU. And Oregon’s two losses.

Somebody with a loss had to go, so if your standard for a loss counting is that it eliminates you from the BCS, then fine…. our first game didn’t count. But that’s a ridiculous standard.

And just to be clear

I think Alabama was clearly the BETTER team than Okie State, but Okie State also definitely was more deserving of a shot. I don’t wanna bash on Bama or try to act like the title isn’t legit, just saying that this season has destroyed anything left of the BCS’ argument defending the system.

BCS sux. We need a playoff.

But I don’t think OSU was more deserving.

Like me, you're not impartial

By every computational standard I’ve seen, OSU had a stronger resume than Alabama and, therefore, was more “deserving.”

You must have missed

this one. Updated now, but before the game LSU was #1 and Bama #2. Pretty complete metric if you read the definitions.

They do a great job there.

After the SEC Championship I posted a comment to Bill Connelly at Football Study Hall inquiring to the possibity of our surpassing LSU should we win. He said it would be difficult. And yet we did.

No doubt I have an Alabama bias and an SEC bias.

But while OSU beat more ranked teams, our biggest win prior to bowl selection was against BCS #6 Arkansas 38-14, while OSU’s was against #8 KSU 52-45. Our lone loss was against #1 LSU 9-6, while OSU lost to 6-6 ISU 37-31.

I don't see the logic in that statement.

You are equating a loss counting with a loo disqualifying a team. Those are not the same.

I didn't count for OK State

The system is the system until it changes and Alabama has the trophy.

But, if there’s anything that will define Alabama’s championship, it’s that Alabama’s mere presence in the game, not whether they won it or not, is going to be the catalyst for changing the system.

It took Cam Newton’s father to push the edges of acceptability (and legality) far enough that the NCAA finally fixed the loophole that allowed it to happen. It took a good Alabama team slipping into the NCG, when they didn’t deserve to be there, for the BCS to finally start thinking about how to fix the loopholes that made it possible.

According to the Final FEI ratings, LSU finished “with the No. 1 strength of schedule and won 12 FBS games.”

Oklahoma State finished second and Alabama third.

Ask Oklahoma State if every game counts.

by Gonzeaux on Jan 12, 2012 12:50 PM CST reply actions

WOW! your butt must really be stinging...

after seeing your team being completely and totally dominated, some would even say humiliated for 60 minutes on national television by a team that “didn’t deserve to be there” .

Maybe you should try one of those foam doughnut things in your chair. That might help.

by TiderInOR on Jan 13, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

Butt doesn't hurt, just my head

It was a great season, only slightly smudged by having to play Alabama again.

When explaining to northerners about LSU fans, “We’d allow Les to lose every game of the season as long as he beats Alabama.”

Fortunately, he did.

Next year, I’ll have to amend that to say, “…as long as he beats Alabama, twice.”

by Gonzeaux on Jan 13, 2012 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

See above

but FEI is only one component of the Football Outsiders F+ rating, which they deem their “official Top 25.”

Right.

S&P has Alabama #1, LSU #2, and OSU#5.

lol. The possibility of going to a plus one is entirely because of the SEC having both teams in the bcs and other conferences getting shut out. Look at 2004. An undefeated Auburn team gets left out of the BCS while Oklahoma gets their asses stomped, and that wasn’t enough to get any traction for a plus 1. But yea, the team that just dominated LSU up and down the field didn’t deserve to be there and THAT’S going to bring about change.

No, this is about 6 BCS championships in a row, and an all SEC championship games. That, and people who don’t like the system already and are looking for an exuse to spur change.

If OK State doesn’t think every game counts, then I don’t know what to say. Did you see them lose to Iowa State?

I like Matt.

If every game counts, then the BCSCG counts. Moreover, Kevin Steele had a great resume when hired by Clemson and failed. The SEC Championship is important, but does not in and of itself qualify you as national champions, as Monday proves.

Logically, the BCSNCG can't count..

..or we’d have the trophy. LSU beat Alabama in their house, Alabama beat LSU in a neutral site (although, having grown up in N.O., that’s debatable; but, it wasn’t Tiger stadium). LSU was 13-1, Alabama was 12-1. Overall, we had better wins.

Make sure to clean the trophy before you drop it off in BR. ;)

by Gonzeaux on Jan 14, 2012 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

I think you attach too much importance to where the game is played.

Three consecutive road games is one thing, especially against tough competition, but 1 road game with 2, 5, or 6 weeks to prepare is another. Besides, playing in Birmingham or Tuscaloosa never intimidated or overwhemed LSU, nor has Alabama had any problems in Baton Rouge o New Orleans because of the location or environment.

Every game counts towards advancing to at best selection to the BCSNCG, a single elimination game whose results count.

As for head to head competition, you won a regular season game 9-6, we won the National Championship 21-0. We’ve outscored you 27-9. LSU as the #1 team lost to #2 Alabama, a team it had beaten, 21-0, its only loss of the season. #2 Alabama lost only one time, to #1 LSU, 9-6.

For the record...

The Krystal deal was CLASSLESS – The Updyke deal was CRAZY. Do we have some fans that are either classless, crazy or both – yes. Is it indicative of the entire fanbase? No.

As for the game – it was not LSU’s best effort and Miles baffled everyone by not going to Lee. I do want to give credit to our coaches and team as they were ready and well prepared.

You’ll have a great team next year and I’m looking forward to continual rivalry of two great team battling for years to come.

Peace.

Talent can only get you so far. Give me a player who has less talent, but the heart of a champion and the will to succeed.

Wish I hadn't seen that.

What a disgrace. Hopefully this Alabama fan will get the maximum punishment. Maybe some time in jail will enlighten him that karma is a bitch.

Bama = Utah

We totally did not show up for this game. Our head was nowhere near the game, so we got smacked around offensively, and offensively smacked around.

We’ll be back next year to make amends. Better, Stronger, Faster. With a QB, even.

…and no JJ.

Enjoy that backdoor crystal. Just bring it on over with ya on 11/3. We’ll take care of things from there.

Geaux Tigers!
