Link Gumbo 1/16/11
Our week of sorrows continued this weekend as the Men fell at Arkansas and the Ladies snapped a 10 game winning streak at Florida.
By the time you read this the deadline to file papers for the NFL Draft will have passed and as of late Sunday, only Rueben Randle, Michael Brockers, and Mo Claiborne have declared of LSU's eligible players. (they have 72 hours to back out, as Brandon Lafell once did). Thanks to one helluva re-recruting job by Les Miles, Russell Shepard will be back next year, while LB Trevon Randle (recently joined the basketball team EDIT: I have mistaken Trevon Randle for football walk-on Ronald Martin, who joined the basketball team this past weekend) and RB Jakhari Gore will not be on the team next year. WR Kadron Boone also appears to be transferring, but I've not seen official confirmation on that from any source or his potential destination.
Aside from Billy Gonzales officially taking the OC job at Illinois, there has been very little movement on LSU's coaching staff. Thanks to Billy leaving, Les Miles gets to take a few more in-home visits with recruits, so dont expect the vacancy to be filled anytime soon. Elsewhere, former LSU Special Teams coach Joe Robinson, who left to take the DL job at UNC just before Butch Davis was fired, as ended up back in the SEC as the ST coach at USC. TeamSpeedKills is keeping track of all the coaching changes in the SEC.
G Will Blackwell, S Brandon Taylor, and TE Deangelo Peterson were all named to the Senior Bowl roster. Meanwhile, Jarrett Lee will play in the Casino del Sol College All-Star Game tonight in Tucson (technically a rebirth of the old Blue-Gray Game), on a team coached by Houston Nutt. The game will be televised on some, but not all of the FSN stations at 7pm. Lee will also be playing in the NFLPA game later this month and LB Karnell Hatcher and OL Greg Shaw will play in the Battle of Florida.
Who's ready for the Mettenberger-Kiel QB controversy? (and what about Rivers?)
Now for the team that hasn't had a chance to disappoint us yet: LSU Baseball (33 days until first pitch) Practice began yesterday in Alex Box with a lot of new names throwing from the mound. Practices continue throughout the week and are open to the public. Coach Mainieri had a great interview with College Baseball 360's podcast covering a wide range of topics. Of course, If you'd rather sink back into your depression, you can read this sad tale of what's going on in Omaha these days.
One of the oddest stories I missed sharing in the days leading up to the game, Wright Thompson caught up with our old friend Edwin Edwards.
It's been a horrific week to be a sports fan in Louisiana, but as The Accidental Cajun reminds us, "Well, we haven’t had a hurricane in awhile."
Misery loves company, Ole Miss lost out on a CB recruit to Tulane.
SB Nation's Bill Connelly breaks down the Top 100 CFB games of the 2011 season. LSU makes 5 appearances, but none in the Top 20.
Spencer Hall has a special message for you about recruiting season, which is a good opportunity to bring up the fact that Crowley RB Davante Bourque has officially flipped to the Vols (he had decommitted from LSU back on January 4th)
After being fired from A&M, Mike Sherman sent out an amazing letter to Texas high school football coaches detailing his coaching philosophies that makes for a great, if long, read.

He was supposed to red-shirt
but hasn’t been practicing with the team since before christmas. For what it’s worth, he was a Willie Lyles guy

Randle's not on the bball team
Ronald Martin is. Randle is transferring.
Thanks
I’m getting names confused this morning for some reason.

what happened to gore?
I can understand wanting to transfer but I hadn’t heard he would for sure

From what I've seen
He was a Billy G guy and his leaving is part of the reason he’s transferring, though he hasn’t been practicing with the FB team since before christmas.

strike that
Obviously it was Boone, the WR, who was a player Gonzales had heavily recruited, not Gore. (I’m all mixed up this morning)
Not sure what exactly happened with Gore, but there have been rumors of him transferring for months

I think it's a matter of PT too
He’s behind Blue, Ford and Ware (all sophmores) and classmates Hilliard and Magee.
An OT game
between #1 and #2 rates only 40th on Connelly’s list? It really is sad how the bulk of CFB fans now have so little appreciation for great defense. Watching your team smother someone is so much better than watching them win 60-35 in my opinion.

"Our week of sorrows continues..." ???
Enough with the belly aching. We got beat in the BCS Championship game and lost a couple of b-ball games. We are the reigning SEC Champions. Not Bama, not anyone else.
We as fans have to put the losses behind us and get back to the positives of our athletic program and our school. LSU sports programs are in great shape and only getting better. If a recruit elects to go elsewhere, fine we are bigger than a single recruit…if a current player elects to transfer to get more PT, then fine, there is a reason he wasn’t playing more in the first place…if a player leaves early for the NFL, then outstanding, he will be a Tiger forever carrying our name in the NFL… if we happen to lose a b-ball game, then let’s get ready to cheer our asses off for the next game.
Comments about “week of sorrows” and the baseball team not “disappointing us yet” are weak and unnecessary. PK, this post is not directed at you personally (I just happen to be using your column to make my point), this is directed to all LSU fans having a hard time moving on. We are past time to say, keep your head up, and have moved into a time where our heads should be raised high and proudly proclaiming “Geaux Tigers” at every opportunity. ATVS is the home of delusional optimism. Let’s tap back into that and get away from wallowing in our sorrows.
Geaux Tigers!!!

Amen, Brother
Speaking with folks back in BR makes me glad I only get my news online. All the garbage rumored about is top of mind for my 70-year-old parents. Talked them down from the ledge yesterday and reminded them what a great season it was. Is. Still is. The season isn’t over until the next one starts and LSU went 13-1. Pretty nice.
Call it a hunch
Methinks next year’s big offensive “controversy” will shift over to the running back position. As in as soon as there’s a bad run, “why is X in over Y” will erupt.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
Agreed
Can’t see Les Miles turning over the keys to a true freshman – especially with another team with a chance to challenge for the SEC and MNC.
I must have missed those Blackwell statements.
Does anyone have any clue how likely it might be for Josh D to get another year? I think someone on this site had mentioned that he is likely not going to press for one and start coaching as a Grad Asst.
I think he will/is pushing for a 6th year
When he decided to not play in the champ game (wether he would have seen the field is another question) he did so to help his shot at a 6th year. If he doesn’t get it, he could return for another year of coaching, but it’s too early to speculate on that until the rest of the staff is settled.

Baseball
Started following this site in football season, was wondering how much LSU baseball coverage I can expect?
I’m in a desperate need of something positive and the baseball team hasn’t lost yet.
I’m sure, though, they’ll do their best to make it another stressful season.
Baseball coverage
In a word, Tons. Until actioncuse started doing basketball, I dare say it’s our 2nd best coveerd sport

We love baseball!
PK rocks the recaps and you can expect me to rant incessantly about the stupidity of bunting in a high run environment. Also, I predict we will be complaining about whoever gets sucked into the Third Base Void of Suck this season.

And thank you for converting me from the stupidity of bunting
But hey, what can I say I used to be good at it in high school so I had a soft spot for bunting :)

Listening to the Maneri interview....
He made a comment about LSU fans not staying the whole game shakes head.
I’m getting pretty excited for baseball season. Will you guys do sort of a team primer, introducing the new players and such?
Also, Mens basketball, PLEASE beat Auburn tomm.
2011 #1 LSU 13-0 SEC Champions
No official word yet.
I won’t believe any reports until he says something or appears on one of the two campuses.
