Deion Jones
Hits ball carriers hard. However, might have to wrap up on the SEC level.

he's also kind of small for an SEC linebacker
but then he is fast as all hell and Chavis likes that, he’ll probably red shirt and spend a year bulking up

You're going to see a lot of this class redshirt I would bet
because the starting lineup is fairly set for next year.
BUT…I said the same thing in 2010 and that class surprised a lot of people.

I think the best candidate for a redshirt
is a QB from Mississippi whose name rhymes with “Leremy Jiggins” who looks like he’s about 20-30 pounds of dropped body fat away from being the next Kenny Hilliard

I know he was given a lot of consideration as a Safety
Not sure if he has the speed to play back there, but I think he would be a better fit in our SS spot

He doesn't show big brother's speed
But he’s a smooth athlete and you gotta like that.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
I think speed is the least important attribute for a college WR
Off the top of my head, Dwayne Jarrett was slow as hell at Southern Cal and he was un-coverable at the college level because he ran good routes, had good hands, etc. I bet I could think of more……I don’t recall Josh Reed being a blazer, though I might be mistaken…..dude just LIVED open.

I watched most of the off-target throws LSU has been famous for
Thank god we keep getting WRs who can adjust to the ball, otherwise we would have no passing game
do you mean to suggest that LSU has had a passing game?
since 2007? c’mon man the best things to happen to LSU involving passing plays in the past four seasons were all on defense

When you consider how little football that kid’s actually played…BEAST.

Not a sideline-to-sideline guy
But I like that he’s willing to sick his head in there on interior runs.
Of course, he has to come back from the knee injury.

So we've got two LBer recruits with knee injuries?

Granier and Alexander
But that’s one advantage of signing 7, wouldn’t you say?
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
He's not overly fast
but seems like a sold tackler to me. Whether or not he can fully grasp the DEF and become a leader (like Sheppard) is key to me. If he can “run” the Def, he will be a great Mike LB… if not, he will be standout special teamer

Kwon Alexander Goodness JHD
cant be any worse than Karnell Hatcher should be lining up on the other side of T Jones. I kind of like the movement back to bigger recievers ( Even though Laundry & ODB will be beasts) but I think if these 3 receivers pan out it will resemble the 2006 WR core

Guys to watch this spring
Hill and Lamar Louis. Hill’s got some big-time potential, but obviously he’s got a lot in front of him there.
Louis…man what an athlete. Where he fits in is the big question.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
I don't see any new comer contributing at running back next year
absent injuries (knock on wood) I just can’t see a freshman taking carries away from the running backs LSU already has, redshirt them all and keep this deep stable going forward
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
That's what'll be intereting to see
A lot of people thought Hill was superior to Hilliard a year ago.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),

Debo Jones
Has tape I can fap to.
Kwon is one of my 10 favorite players in this class (speaking nationally). Never, ever dreamed he’d wind up at LSU. His injury made a lot of people forget how good this kid is.
Eye right blahgs.
This is a very underrated class
At least two of these linebackers are going to be All-SEC. Hunter projects to be all-conference. One of the WRs is going to be All-conference. if you can pull 4 or 5 all-conference players a class then you are doing ok.

Even without Collins and Kiel
This is a great class. We’ve got a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years.
Certified Delusional Optimist
I keep comparing it to the 2010 class
2009 had a bunch of big names, and everybody knew that 2011 was going to be star-studded. 2010 was considered a relatively down year in the state, and everybody was mad about losing Trovon Reed to Auburn.
And that group has already performed well beyond expectations and still has more to contribute.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
And the biggest thing the folks pannicking need to realize
Is that things would have likely still played out this way regardless of the way the BCS title game played out.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
think about the names in the 2010 class
Reid, Simon, Blue, Mathieu, Ware, Brad by Crikey Wing. Think about the contributions from those guys that took us to 13-1, never mind the guys who played well when their number was called. And that was supposed to be a down year.

Some BIG linemen in this class
Which works well when you look at the backs already on this roster, and realize that there’s the already legendary Leonard Fournette coming in 2014.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
Speaking of linemen
is La’el Collins still set to be a tackle or does it look like he’s been permanently moved to guard?
My guess is that he probably starts at guard next year
And could slide out to RT once Hurst moves on. Faulk has LT on lockdown.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
that sounds about right
and would certainly be the ideal situation
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
by Tike the Miger on Feb 1, 2012 3:05 PM CST up reply actions
You lose both starting guards
Plus the top backup (T-Bob)…so you have Williford probably taking one spot, but that leaves one more up for grabs between Collins, Jonah Austin, Trai Turner, Eliot Porter, Corey White, Evan Washington and Chris Davenport. And some of those guys are going to play center or stay at tackle.
And of course, there’s Josh Dworaczyk, if his knee holds up and he gets an extra year.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
pretty sure that Miles and Dworaczyk knew something pretty reassuring
about the chance for a 6th year before the game I won’t refer to directly, because he had a chance to play in it and intentionally declined, wouldn’t mind seeing him at center with Williford and Collins at guard, that would be a nasty o-line
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
by Tike the Miger on Feb 1, 2012 3:12 PM CST up reply actions
Oh, and I forgot that you also have Vadal Alexander in that mix this spring
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
I don't know
Hurst had a rough January, but people forget he was a pretty dominant run-blocker for most of the year. He does have his pass-pro issues though.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
the tackles were definitely better run blockers
but it fit when LSU was throwing the ball 12 times a game, might want to revisit that strategy with Mettenberger under center
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
by Tike the Miger on Feb 1, 2012 3:28 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not worried about Faulk
He had a much better year in pass pro. Especially when you consider he was a first-time starter. There was a stretch where he was straight-up dominating people this year.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
I think the o-line in general will continue to be a strength
and with the running backs they have on the roster I think they’ll be able to start next season playing the same conservative ball control ground and pound offense they played for much of this past season, then as Mettenberger develops they can slowly open things up downfield more and more
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
by Tike the Miger on Feb 1, 2012 3:32 PM CST up reply actions
Well, look at the backs compared to the receivers
Even if ODB, Landry, Wright, Shepard, Boone and the rest come along really well, if you compare them to Ware, Hilliard, Ford, Blue (and maybe Hill), the latter is the group that should probably be touching the ball the most.
But if Mett does in fact become our “big damn hero,” you’ll see the passing game pickup. Miles has never been afraid to sling it when he had the arms.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook

And like I said, stack up the backs vs. the WRs
I don’t think many people would say, even if Mett is as good as we hope, that the WRs need to be touching the ball more than this back corps.
But if the QB comes through, you can maximize those touches.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
more of a matter of balance
the running backs’ touches will also be maximized if they’re running at 7 man fronts
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
by Tike the Miger on Feb 2, 2012 11:59 AM CST up reply actions
Depends on how you think about balance
To me, it’s not necessarily a 50/50 run-pass ratio, it’s more about the ability to spread the ball around (whether that’s with the run or the pass), that maximizes your playmakers.

And the Valley Shook

this class
is full of guys who can fill out the starting lineup, I doubt there are any real stars in this group (what do I know?) but some solid starters will come out of it and they’ll generally hold their own well enough for the stars already on the roster (and hopefully those yet to come) to dominate and keep LSU in contention for championships going forward, there isn’t an Anthony Johnson or a Patrick Peterson, but hopefully there are some Russell Sheppards and Brandon Taylors, guys who will stick around for four or five years and make meaningful contributions, just not the kind of elite talent that wins championships, hopefully the ones already on the roster (and again future players to come) are enough to bring another Crystal Ball back to Baton Rouge
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
I wouldn't say that there aren't ANY real stars
There may not be that guy who steps on campus and is amazing from day one, but I think there are a couple that definitely COULD be stars in a year or three.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
Why would you say that this class is
“just not the kind of elite talent that wins championships”?
How many teams have won titles with classes that aren’t ranked in the top 5? I could understand if this class came in outside the top 20, but it didn’t. It was a couple of signatures away from a top 5 class. These guys are tremendous athletes and have great coaches. As long as they are willing and able to be coached, then we will be fine.
If I remember correctly, [nickname redacted] wasn’t that highly recruited either, but he made a name for himself in his first season (as did a lot of the not so highly regarded members of his class). That class took us to the brink of a championship. Why think that this class will be any different before they have even had an opportunity to contribute.
This is the home of delusional optimism. This class will be great before they are done.
by Displaced Tiger on Feb 1, 2012 3:22 PM CST up reply actions
I meant that there aren't the kind of dominant players
no Glenn Dorsey or Rueben Randle, not saying LSU can’t or won’t win a championship with these guys on the team (I’d be really disappointed if they don’t win one this year), I just meant that they’ll need to get back to bringing in the kind of star players they have in the past to win more going forward, but again what do I know?

To be fair
We should acknowledge that we didn’t expect Mo Claiborne, Bennie Logan, Tyrann Mathieu, etc to be “difference makers” and they all are/were.
To me, it’s tough to evaluate. The class lacks “star power” but it may not lack “star players.”

with the kind of depth LSU had this season it had to be tough to sell the program to the 5 star recruits, most of them had to know they’d be redshirting

I think more of it has to do with Alabama obsession. LSU fans are not happy with what WE are and what we have. I mean I understand the frustrations of Jan 9th, I even understand the frustrations of losing some LA guys. But when people bring it up they bring up Alabama along with it.
I just wish people would be happy that we are LSU. We have great coaches, we have great players, great facilities. Is Alabama’s class better then ours? YES. Is our class STILL A GOOD CLASS? YES.

fans are concerned because we’re losing top recruits while Bama’s overflowing with them, is LSU great? of course, but if the Tigers are going to win championships they’re going to need to beat Bama, having good players is a big part of that, pulling this class while Bama signs 13 of the ESPN top 150 feels like getting blown out again

Bama has had classes in the top 3 on ESPN since 2008
we have split with them since then (unless you count some game in January 2012 that I can’t remember). Florida State, Clemson, Notre Dame, Miami, all these teams have had “better” recruiting classes than us since that time (other than our ESPN number 1 class in 2009) and none of those teams have done squat. Texas might deserve to be in that number too. There is very little difference between a top 5 and a top 10 class because there are simply no data available to make a meaningful distinction between the two. It’s all just eyeball stuff at this point. See, e.g., every recruiting bust every; but cf., Hester, Jacob; Claiborne, Mo; 7, TM.
We may have to switch from Delusional Optimism to Relentless Optimism for the off-season.

Delusional Optimism spin...
I truly believe this class is going to have a real chip on its shoulder. Even in a fairly complimentary thread, we’re talking about the lack of star power or difference makers. This is a class full of guys who want to be here, were nationally recruited, but are being treated as “the leftovers”.
These guys, hopefully, show up on campus ready to prove everybody wrong. No one is telling these recruits how great they are, which means they are ready to work. There’s something to be said for a class full of very talented players who should also be incredibly motivated.

Good on him
I can even ignore that ugly ass banner behind him ;-)

I guess that for all of my doom and gloom talk today
I should keep things in perspective, Wisconsin’s still pretty decent right?
all I ask is for the chance to prove that money can't buy happiness
Liggins and Kwon
are two I’ll be pulling for a lil more than the rest – I’m a sucker for guys overcoming an injury or something not so serious, like, oh I dunno – kidney cancer at 3 years old!!! Really hope we see Rohan 2 – “Bulked Up” in Liggins and just pure meanness from Kwon for years to come.
It'll be very interesting to see how Liggins develops
He kind of lobs some of his throws, but I’ve seen QBs fix that with minor mechanical adjustments.
And honestly with his size and athleticism I could totally see him moving to another spot in a few years if that doesn’t work.

I could see Liggins
EASILY becoming a Jacob Hester/Kenny Hilliardesque running back, Spencer Ware played QB in high school too didn’t he?

Yeah but he wasn't 280 pounds
My guess is if Liggins doesn’t work out at QB, it’ll be TE or maybe even defensive line for him.

it's been a looooooooong time
since LSU has really gotten substantial production from a tight end, would be nice to have a real receiving threat there

I thought John Thomas would be that guy
Hopefully he can qualify and still get him in. But DeSeasn Smith from Barbe next year will be a stud…DandyDon’s #1 Player in the State. We gotta land him…

Still a chance to take Thomas
If he gets his grades up. Though he’s another kid rehabbing a knee injury I believe.

but one way or another he looks like he belongs with the ball in his hands

Agree
And the recruiting class of 2013 is likely to bring in a potentially big-time receiving TE in DeSean Smith.
