The series loss to Kentucky has damaged LSU a little, with LSU either dropping or holding steady in the mid Top 10 range, and postseason projections mainly hold the Tigers out of the Top 8 national seeds, but there is still plenty of time to work on that. Next week especially could give LSU a huge boost with games against Tulane and a huge road series at Ole Miss. There's a ton to be happy about with this team, as Raph Rymes, now hitting an even .500 for the season, continues to battle for the SEC Batting Record, and continued contributions from former bench guys like Arby Fields have the team now hitting at .301. The pitching staff had a bit of a letdown weekend against one of the best offenses in the country, but I expect them to rebound quickly
Southeastern (28-13, 13-8 in the Southland Conference) is one of the better in-state baseball clubs, nearly on the level of Tulane, and while LSU's record against them is lopsided (61-17, last loss in 2008), the Lions always present tough competition. The Lions are ranked #49 in the RPI and are currently projected by many to secure an At-Large bid for the NCAA. Their season has had it's ups and downs, with a pair of wins over both USL and Miss St., but 3 separate midweek losses to Tulane and conference series losses to Lamar and Nicholls St. blemish an otherwise impressive resume.
The big story at the plate is 2B Brock Hebert (401/484/541 21BB/24K 26 RBI 1 HR) who's racked up several SLC PotW awards already, and has stolen 30 bases, 1 off the SLU all-time record. The Lions have just one other hitter over .300, and are batting .275 with just 5 HR as a team for the season. SLU will be starting a regular in Josh Janway and have an impressive staff with a team ERA of 3.21 with a handful of dangerous arms who could come out of the pen, including Stefan Lopez (0.48 ERA 18.2IP in 18 App 3BB 28K)
An odd TV pairing tonight as the game will be live on Cox Sports AND streamed live in the GeauxZone, were LSU is currently promoting a 2-day free trial. The weather is a little warmer than it has been the last few days, hitting a high of 80, but it's clear and the wind should be blowing out tonight.
