Today, August 5th, is the eleventh birthday of my very first nephew, Grant Michael Goughnour.
He was born in 2002, in Memphis, Tenn.
Sadly, he won't be celebrating with his mom, dad and three siblings. In fact, he never saw his first birthday. Grant passed away 17 days after he was born, due to an un-diagnosed congenital heart defect. For the last six years, my sister and the rest of my family have helped to host Grant's Gala, an annual fundraiser for the Children's Heart Foundation, to support research and that will advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart defects.
This year's Gala will be held on Saturday, August 24 from 7-11 p.m. at the Memphis Zoo's Teton Trek. Ticket information is available at the aforelinked site for a fantastic evening that will include food, drinks and entertainment from the Andy Childs Band. There will be prizes and a silent auction with a massive range of prizes, including college football (yes, LSU), NBA and other sports-themed items.
Please, check out grantsgala.com for more information, to purchase tickets or just to donate. Yours truly will be on hand for the festivities, so if anybody is in the Memphis area and wants to spend a fun night out for a great cause, holler at me via email or twitter.
