As expected, five-star 2017 defensive back prospect JaCoby Stevens committed to LSU today, choosing the Tigers over Alabama and Georgia.
The 6-1, 200-pound Stevens is a composite five-star prospect and the No. 2 safety in the class of 2017. He is LSU’s 19th commitment in this class and second safety, joining four-star Grant Delpit of the IMG Academy. Stevens moves LSU up to No. 3 in the 247 Sports composite class rankings.
While Austin Thomas deserves a lot of credit for discovering Stevens early on, give
Dave Aranda and Corey Raymond plenty for re-securing his pledge this summer.
What Stevens Brings to LSU (cdub):
With Delpit already in this class, Stevens gives this class a second top-tier safety that will be arriving to Baton Rouge in December as early enrollees. This is huge for LSU due to the fact that both starting safeties in Rickey Jefferson and Jamal Adams are likely departing after this season. In watching his highlights posted above, Stevens has elite athleticism and he combines that with quick decision making to make him a huge center field threat. Playing both wide receiver and safety at his high school just further proves the athleticism that stands out from the first clip you see of him. He shows an effortlessness to his playing style that jumps off the screen. It wouldn’t surprise me if this kid is a very high draft pick one day. Once Stevens gets the ball in his hands, he has that threat to score with his agility and awareness of what is happening around him. Aranda will need guys next season that he can plug and play, especially if no one on that depth chart makes serious noise this season, and Stevens is definitely a guy that can get that done
