LSU - Arkansas Gameday Open Thread

vs

The Arkansas Razorbacks present the last obstacle for the #1 Tigers to overcome before heading to Atlanta for the SEC Title game. Kickoff's at 1:30 CT in Baton Rouge.

Don't believe that 13 point spread; this is likely Houston Nutt's last game, and it's Darren McFadden's last chance to make a push for the Heisman trophy before almost certainly moving on to NFL riches. Beyond that, Les Miles has undoubtedly had a world of emotions swimming through his head all week in the wake of Lloyd Carr's announced departure from Michigan. It's no small distraction, and the pressure's on Miles as the world watches to see if he can keep his team focused in the midst of those rumors. I happen to think Coach Miles has handled the discussion impeccably well.

On that note, regardless of how this team finishes the year, at this stage Les has led the Tigers to 10 wins for three straight years - an LSU first - and that alone is worthy of high praise, regardless of Nick Saban's having stacked the talent cupboards prior to Miles' arrival. Many coaches have accomplished far less with plenty of talent themselves (look no further than Ann Arbor this year, in fact).

Things I'd like to see today:

  • Reasonable defensive containment of the Hogs' running game, given they have zero passing game for us to respect. By reasonable, I mean I'm okay with our giving up 100 yards to McFadden. 300 yards to whatever combination of Jones and McFadden, though, and we're toast.

  • How about Ryan Perrilloux getting some snaps earlier? I haven't been able to read everything coming out of Baton Rouge this past week and a half, so I'm not sure why we aren't seeing him until mop up duty. Gary Danielson seemed to think it was Flynn's ankle being 100%.

  • Glenn Dorsey, Jacob Hester, and Early Doucet to shine in their last games at Tiger Stadium.

CHARLES SCOTT ON SPECIAL TEAMS!
Not how I imagined him getting involved, but hey...we'd better turn that kickoff fumble into six!

Flynn
total hardass

That run was great
That said, I'm not sure why he felt he had to throw that endzone route to Doucet on the first play after the fumble. He was WELL covered. Flynn didn't even think twice. Maybe it's one of those plays in which he didn't even have a checkdown.

Whatever. 3 is better than nothing.

There's our "shaky kicker"

I will give our D an A+ through 2 possessions
Offense, a little less so unless we start getting sevens instead of threes.

What the hell guys
3 and out? We're one missed tackle on D-Mac away from trailing in this game.

Please no
Not one of those games were the defense is herculean and the offense gets cute.

Flynn's lack of touch on the last drive cost LaFell that first down. If LaFell hadn't had to jump for it, he probably drags the defender another four yards.

Arkansas is begging to be blown out here. Lets do it.

Flynn
I'm fine with the playcalling, and Flynn has invariably come through late in the game every time. But with the exception of last week, it almost seems like he's always in an uphill battle at the start of every game so that he can get his wits about him.

I'm just not sure I understand why we don't let RP get a few snaps in there to mix it up and spell MF for a bit.

I haven't seen anything great out of Flynn as a passer. I love the nerves of steel, but where's the early game killer instinct?

I'm not saying he's incapable of it, I just want to see it.

Charles Scott up the gut on 2nd and 17
It just seems like we don't really want this. We kinda do, but expect it to be handed to us. Recipe for disaster.

I am just not impressed with Mr. Flynn today.

Defense
Can force 3 and outs all day, and just one drive can be a killer when our offense isn't even TRYING to help out.

Of course, this is shaping up to be a 97 yard drive for the Hogs, so even with those other three and outs, the defense shouldn't let this happen.

RP
Have you heard ANYTHING about why he isn't playing? As I mentioned in the preview up top here, all I've heard is Danielson last week say it's basically b/c Flynn is 100% now so we don't feel the need for RP.

I beg to differ.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 3:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Couple thoughts
I hate being the guy to lay it on one guy, but frankly, the entire blame right now rests on Flynn. He's been absolutely horrible. Bad decisions, bad throws. He's had it in him in the past to get over these bad starts and be cool as ice down the stretch so we'll see. We damn sure need it.

Two positives:

  1. Holding Arkansas to just 7 in a half. I'll take that any day.
  2. One penalty. At least that part's been somewhat addressed today.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 3:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I Know You Have Said This More Then Once This Year
but why the heck did Flynn pass almost 25 times in one half. Run the gosh darn ball. I mean it is football 101. Just cause they stuff you on a couple series you don't stop running the ball when you are either up by six or down by one.

Maybe they're trying to let MF get some rhythm?
I'm with you, not sure what's up with that many passes. Had a few 2nd and 3rd and longs. We need to start getting 5+ yards on first.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 3:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I Am Not Going To Get Down On Flynn
cause he seems to do what it takes to win, but I just think you have to help put him in the best situation for him to come through, and third and long is not that situation.

And although Miles did call at halftime to ask what I thought, but if he did I would have said give it to Scott and pound the ball right down their throats.

Let us not forget New Orleans. Visit Project Katrina.

by tommyguniii on Nov 23, 2007 3:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Tough to argue with that
As much as most of us fans are sitting here begging for it, I will give Miles credit for this much: he clearly knows what RP can do, and if it's simply a "doghouse" issue keeping RP on the bench, then kudos to Miles for risking a title and sticking with his principles. Not playing him is his own decision. Miles isn't trying to mess with our heads. He wants a national championship on his resume more than any of us do.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 3:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No You Are Right About That
Principles are pretty lacking on most sports these days. And if we lose a chance for a national title cause he is coaching based on principles more power to him. I'd rather have a team/coach/school I can be proud of more then a title. Although I would kind of like to have both of them.

3 straight to Hester to start the half
That's getting the crowd back into it! Keep moving the chains.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 3:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yep
I had zero expectations of being able to completely contain D-Mac.

You really get the feeling with our lethargy today there's just no way this team gets the fire in it to come back and win. As in, maybe the offense has laid it on the shoulders of the D one time too many and now it's time to pay the piper.

I will say this much though - I like the playcalling on offense to start the half. Even though Hester didn't get the first down, and it was predictable that we'd go to him, I have no problem with the call.

Well Since It Worked I Was All For It
I've really liked Mile's aggressive play calling this year. I've always felt when you have a good team that by doing stuff like this you're showing you have complete faith in their ability. And I have to think believe that helps them believe in themselves. And when you are playing at this high of a level it is often those "little" things you can't measure that makes all the difference.

Have to give Nutt credit
They are perfectly fine calling that same play (McFadden in the Wildcat aka Wild-HOG) on first down every time, and it's only getting 2 yards. Then it's mixing it up later in the series that nets them the first down (or huge play TD).

We just need ONE stop....COME ON GUYS!

I can't believe I'm saying it but he's actually made some decent throws. We have to pressure him on those 3rd down situations.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 4:33 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Notice we didn't blitz, and Dick nearly converted a 3rd and 18...16 yards and they damn well could have gone for it on fourth and likely gotten it had they wanted.

I Just Have To Say This

Let us not forget New Orleans. Visit Project Katrina.

by tommyguniii on Nov 23, 2007 4:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Really?
I could do with a little less discussion of Tebow but that guy is a stud. He's done what he has against so much better competition than Brennan has. He's so damn versatile, as a running or passing threat. It's tough not to give it to him, in my opinion.

by GeauxTigers on Nov 23, 2007 4:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That Is One Part Of The Conversation
I dislike, the level of the competition. Colt plays who is on the schedule. He can't control that. I also dislike when I hear (I am talking Around the Horn and PTI -- not you) people say it is the "system" that helps Colt. I mean the system Tebow plays in is built 110% around him.

But it could also be a little bit of my biased. I greatly dislike Florida.

I'm not docking Brennan, but Tebow has accomplished no small feat, and he's done it against far superior talent. Just a statement FOR Tebow rather than AGAINST Brennan,
