To hell with SEC Speed, let's talk about SEC Power

Based on articles I've read and conversations I've had with friends over the past month, it's fairly evident that the rest of the nation is sick of hearing about "SEC Speed." Well, so am I

The whole concept ignores SEC Power.

No question speed is crucial and can separate the elite from the chaff. But what use is speed if a team's busy getting overpowered? In Tommy Moffitt, LSU has one of the best strength & conditioning coaches in the country. Again I emphasize the first part of that title: STRENGTH. He's won multiple college and high school coach of the year awards for that position, and deservedly so.

I'm not sure where the database of this is kept at the moment, but it's been mentioned in Tigervision broadcasts that LSU boasts a number of players who can bench press 500 lbs or more (searching this blog for my own comments on the matter, I see that it was 9 players as of the Tulane game in 2006).

Pretty much every article written about the SEC Speed stereotype, though it attempts to point out that it's nearly neutral between Ohio State and LSU, simply fails to address the issue that it's almost insulting for the SEC to get talked about as if it's mere speed that sets the conference apart. And perhaps there's nothing that really does set the conference apart, but for all the discussion about how fast the SEC is, lost in it all is the simple fact that if it came down to a knock-down, drag-out trench-war battle between LSU and any other team in the country - Ohio State included - we wouldn't come across too shabby ourselves. I'm not saying other conferences aren't powerful, but one gets the distinct feeling from listening to all this discussion that not a single person expects LSU to win if the speed issue were neutralized. Everyone goes out of his way to concede that Ohio State is plenty fast themselves, and everyone seems to be picking LSU anyway (be it for the alleged talent discrepancy or home field advantage), but in doing so NO ONE is taking any care to say "Hey, if LSU got punched in the mouth by Ohio State, could it get up and simply overpower its opponent? Could it win the game simply because it can win the battle in the trenches?"

That aspect has been completely swept under the rug, as far as I can tell, and I'm guessing if we DO win the title on Monday night, the following morning's headlines will be talking about the massive void in discussing the sheer strength of the LSU Tigers (and yes, I've seen Vern Gholston's biceps...again, this isn't a relative discussion). It isn't all about speed in the SEC - just ask Glenn Dorsey and Jacob Hester, who don't earn their living OUT-running you, just OVER-running you. Hopefully the nation can get that through its collective head sooner or later. Hopefully they'll learn it Monday night.

SEC "Speed" vs. SEC "Power"
Thank you for finally addressing this matter in a rational manner because quite frankly I'm sick of all of the irrational blather about SEC Speed on just about every SEC school blog and fan site.  Unfortunately, there are many SEC fans who have a sense of "SEC entitlement" in the NC game because of the strength (speed?) of the conference.   Neither LSU nor tOSU got to this game based solely on their quickness, though that attribute certainly contributed to the overall strength of their respective teams. Remember, there are many who believe that neither team belongs in the title match and we would all be well served to remember that our teams lost to at least one team that wasn't faster and/or stronger than us, just better on that day.  Here's hoping for another "instant classic" NC game. Thanks for an entertaining and informative fan site.  Geaux Bucks!!!!!

Good luck
Thanks...I saw some incoming links at least felt that this was just more SEC Crap, but I think an actual read of it makes clear that I'm not disrespecting OSU in any way, just taking umbrage at this conception that we're a bunch of Nancy boys who can't win with any other strategy than speed. Anyone who's bothered to read my Q&A on Around the Oval can note for themselves that I clearly have nothing but respect for the Buckeyes, especially that defense.

Anyway, the point of this was that if it comes down to it, I'm confident we can go toe to toe in a boxing-match type of game, though clearly OSU isn't a bunch of slouches.

Good Luck
I appreciate your honesty and efforts to look at this game objectively, something we might all struggle with from time to time.  We probably have the same fears and nightmares about this game only each is wearing a different uniform.  I've seen three LSU games on the tube this year and believe this will be a great game.  Hopefully, folks around the country will have more respect for the Big Ten football programs after this bowl season is over though it would appear that some gator blogs are still in denial.  Thanks again.

Fears and Nightmares
I'm pretty sure more of those are on the Ohio St. end this year, just in the sense of how much is riding on this game for you guys:  Big Ten respectability and your own program's respectability after last year's title game.  Personally, I think the Big Ten got a bit of a media and fan backlash after a bit of over-hype following the Ohio St. - Michigan game of 2006 when so many were clamoring for a rematch in that season's title game.  Following the blow-out loss to Florida, the backlash was inevitable.  And, as backlashes go, probably went well beyond the actual state of affairs for your program and the Big Ten.

This is actually what scares me the most coming into this game.  I think motivation is a major factor in bowl games.  Look no further than West Virginia's blowout of Oklahoma.  Does anyone think WVU is really that much better than OU?  This title game should deliver a far more motivated Ohio St. squad than last year's game.  I can only hope that LSU's motivation is sufficient because I'm expecting that only a very good performance will be enough for our guys to pull this one out.

Motivation
I agree that motivation plays a pivotal role in preparing a team for the challenge that lies before them.  I believe that sustaining a high level of emotion can also undermine the execution of the simplest mechanics on the field.  Oklahoma, I'm sure, felt that they had something to prove after their unexpected loss to Boise St last year.  I hope the Buckeyes are really prepared to meet this challenge and we trust "the Vest" when he says that they are. If both teams leave it all on the field, it could be a classic match.  Anyway, I hope that you are wrong in your assessment that "a very good performance" by LSU should suffice. I have alot of respect for your program and I hope you will respect ours when this game is over.  Geaux Bucks!!

Respect
No worries there.  I respect your program before the game.  But if y'all drop an Auburn-style chop-block on our man Dorsey, things could change - hah!

Here's hoping we see a good, clean game.
