Monday Round Up

LSU begins the season this Thursday by traveling to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State.

The Tigers and Bulldogs will face off at 7 p.m. on Thursday in a sold out Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. The game will be televised to a national audience on ESPN. It marks the first time since 1991 that LSU will play a Southeastern Conference contest for it season opener.

"It's not ideal, but there are reasons to do it," Miles said of opening the season against a conference team. "Being on national television that day, being the first team on television to start the year and having the opportunity to come back and have a long preparation for our next opponent. There are some reasons to do it."

Miles also announced that the squad voted on game captains for the season opener and that Matt Flynn (offense), Glenn Dorsey (defense) and Craig Steltz (special teams) will serve as captains against Mississippi State.

I like the choices for captains, three seniors who are all leaders and will be counted on this season. Well done Les.

Despite gameday just three days away, the Mississippi State website doesn't have any sort of preview or practice report up since last Wednesday. Oh well.

LSU enters the game ranked No. 2 nationlly in both the AP poll and USA Today coaches poll. The Tigers have two first-place votes from the media and four from the coaches. Mississippi State is about as far from the national rankings as any team could be.

Mike VI is here! I know I was saddened by Mike V's death this Spring. But I am thrilled with the news of LSU securing a new mascot before the start of football season. May Mike VI's reign be a long and successful one.
