Fort Lauderdale, FL defensive tackle Maquedius Bain committed to LSU on Wednesday. If you recall, Bain visited LSU a few weeks back. The word is that a day after his visit, he called up LSU's coaches and committed. When word spread publicly, Bain quickly put the genie back in the bottle and said he was not committed but would announce while at the Under Armour game in Orlando. His college decision was one of the worst kept secrets in college football recruiting, but he wanted to create a little intrigue around his decision.
Well, Bain is now at the Under Armour festivities in Orlando and he was true to his word, announced for LSU as expected.
I love Bain as a prospect. He's got great size at 6'3" 310 and is extremely athletic and very strong. The word "beast" comes to mind. He shows off his athleticism on the basketball court where he averaged 19 points and 11 board per game as a senior. He also showed off his versatility by playing a lot of offensive tackle for his high school team as a senior. For the long term, I think Bain has the highest ceiling and most potential of LSU's four defensive tackle commitments.
Already having the size and strength, Bain may be a candidate to be in the rotation as a true freshman. With Bennie Logan expected to declare for the NFL Draft (though LSU fans hoping he comes back), LSU will return just two defensive tackles with any experience in Anthony Johnson and Ego Ferguson. Quentin Thomas will likely get an opportunity to play and that fourth spot in the rotation is up for grabs. Bain could be that guy.
However, Bain is a bit raw and needs to work on his technique and become more consistent. But if he is a quick learner next fall, he could find himself on the field a lot in 2013.
The recruiting sites have a mixed opinion of Bain, and that's not unusual for prospects that are considered "raw". One guy will see a player like Bain and focus on how far he has to go. Another will see the untapped potential. Both 247 Sports and ESPN rate Bain as a four star player. 247 considers Bain the #241 overall player in the nation and the #19 defensive tackle. ESPN rates Bain as the #43 overall prospect in the nation and the #6 defensive tackle. Rivals and Scout have Bain as a three star player.
Bain's offer list looks like one from an elite prospect. Florida State, Oklahoma, Florida, Miami, USC, West Virginia and Tennessee are just some of the programs to offer Bain.
