LSU Baseball Stats: Home Runs and Cody Glenn

A look at LSU's Home Run production and Cody Glenn's rough outing against Mississippi St.

I got some really interesting questions during the week about how much LSU is relying on home runs and if we should panic about Cody Glenn's performance against Mississippi St, so I will focus on those two questions today. I will also look at the team's performance overall in the first three games in SEC play.

If you are unclear about what all these abbreviations mean, here is a guide: Abbreviations Index

Offense against Mississippi St.

The offense was spotty against Mississippi St.. LSU was limited to a team GPA of 0.272 over the weekend and the team hit only 0.208 with runners in scoring position. The team had plenty of chances, but did not capitalize on them completely. The home run was huge for the Tigers over the weekend. Mason Katz hit three home runs while Jared Foster and Alex Bregman also contributed, giving the Tigers five dingers for the weekend. Mississippi St. has one of the best pitching staffs in the SEC, so it is no surprise that they were able to limit the Tiger's production. But when you hit five home runs, several of them with runners on base, then you don't need to rely on a high quantity of hits. Still, the team needs to take better advantage of their opportunities to take pressure off of the pitching staff.

Pitching against Mississippi St.

The starting pitching staff performed admirably against Mississippi St on Friday and Saturday. Aaron Nola performed decently on Friday, giving up a two run home run in the first inning and surrendering two more earned runs in the 5th. Ryan Eades pitched a gem on Saturday, going seven innings and only giving up one earned run. Eades was great in tough spots, not allowing any hits on the eight batters he faced with runners in scoring position. That is how you win games with pitching in the SEC.

The rest of the staff was solid on Friday and Saturday as well, but struggled on Sunday. Bonvillain and Bourgeois both had solid outings out of the pen. Even though he struggled with his command, Bonvillain gave up no runs in the two innings he worked on Friday. He did give free bases to five batters, but he limited the damage by throwing big pitches in tough spots. Bourgeois made two appearances and was huge for the Tigers. With the bases loaded on Friday, he struck out the Bulldog's hottest hitter Hunter Renfroe with a nasty curveball. Sunday was less pretty. The bullpen gave up four earned runs. Will LaMarche had a bad outing, giving up four hits and three earned runs. His ERA was a comical 81.00 because he only worked a third of an inning.

LSU and the Long Ball

Mason Katz has been on one hell of a tear for the Tigers. He has hit seven home runs in the last seven games. Two of those home runs were extremely timely, occurring in the Friday game against Mississippi State when LSU was down three runs and when he broke the tie in the 10th inning.

PodKATT asked me if we were relying on the long ball too much and I thought this was a fairly interesting question. My default was that we might be relying on the HR too much, but after digging through the data it appears that the HR has only affected the outcome in two games, the two wins against Mississippi St. The Friday game is quite obvious with Katz blasting two HR's. But the Saturday game changes completely if Bregman does not hit his home run in the top of the 9th. Without that home run, LSU has a three run lead going into the bottom of the 9th inning. If the events of the 9th are the same and Mississippi St. still gets that home run off of Cotton, we have a one run game. Things could have gotten much more interesting, so Bregman's HR gave us the insurance we needed in the bottom of the 9th.

The HR numbers are impressive though. The HR's account for 32 of LSU's 125 RBI, a little over 25% of all RBI. LSU is second in the SEC with 18 home runs, just one behind SEC leader South Carolina. HRs make up 41% of LSU's extra base hits (18/43). 9 of the 18 HR's have had runners on base. Any time a HR can do extra damage with runners on base is great.

Cody Glenn had a bad outing on Saturday vs. Mississippi St. and this has some people freaking out and questioning his place in the weekend rotation. Here is the thing, sometimes pitchers have bad outings. When you compare that outing against his previous outings, Glenn was not himself. Glenn did not throw strikes like he usually does. His strike % was only 55.9% against the Bulldogs, but his average in the previous four games was somewhere near 68%. He also gave up four walks which is very uncharacteristic for Glenn. The thing to monitor is his next performance against top flight SEC competition and on the road. I would look to the Kentucky and Arkansas series to get a truer gauge of where Glenn is at. If he has a bad outing against Auburn, then we might want to start questioning his spot in the weekend rotation. Look for the trend, not the outlier.
