Strengths
Powerful player that uses his reach well to attack blockers and shed in the running game...tremendous burst up the field, better than his times indicate...high-motor player that was at his best in big games...a vocal leader that was very popular in his locker room.
Weaknesses
Obviously not shy about not giving his best effort at times, which raises questions about work ethic and motivation to be a great player...seems to be a front-runner that will in games without high stakes...does not anticipate and recognize plays and protections as well as he should...not as fluid in space, and better off with his hand on the ground.
Verdict
Montgomery made waves with his comments on his effort level, and those will likely cost him some on draft day. He's not quite athletic enough to be a stand-up pass-rusher, and likely fits in best as a true 4-3 end. Still, when he was motivated, Montgomery was a tremendous overall defensive lineman that did well versus run and pass, and gave tackles fits with quickness and hustle. He may never be a 12-15 sack player in the NFL, but still projects well as a complete end. Draft range anywhere from picks 20-50.
