The 4-star safety from Central-BR High School has flipped his commitment from LSU to Oklahoma State and drops LSU's 2015 class to 14 total commits. The 6-foot-1, 200 pound defensive back is ranked the 15th best player out of Louisiana in the 2015 class according to 247Sports and had been committed to the Tigers since January of this year. Kevin Henry admitted earlier in July that "You never know what's gonna happen in recruiting." via NOLA.com.
Paul's Take
Henry's de-commitment isn't a major shocker. His commitment in January came as somewhat of a surprise, but all the signs pointed to him eventually de-committing from the class. Though listed as a safety, Henry looks more like a prototypical LB in the Chavis defense. Two Crystal Ball picks shifted to Oklahoma State, one from just over a moth ago, another from earlier this morning.
Henry is a nice player and a good get from Oklahoma State. That said, his loss isn't devastating to LSU. LSU remains in pursuit of a number of highly touted defensive backs, many of whom they feel in good position with. Tarvarus McFadden, Deshawn Raymond, Donte Jackson, Kendall Sheffield and Iman Marshall are all still on the board. That's just a handful of high-4 and 5 star players. There's many others the staff will continue to pursue as well.
This could well be a situation where both the staff and player thought it best to move on from one another.
UPDATE
Earlier this evening, news leaked that former LSU commitment Jeremy Cutrer re-committed. You may remember Cutrer from the 2013 class, where he was offered by former DB coach Ron Cooper. Kris Brauner and I ranked Curtrer the 9th best player in the state of Louisiana that season. Cutrer is a big, rangy safety prospect that still needs to add bulk.
The Henry commitment now makes full sense. The staff clearly preferred Cutrer to Henry and once it became evident he would qualify, they let Henry know to take a look around.
