After I wrote this on Wednesday, I honestly believed there was no way that Les Miles would still be coaching LSU after next season. Too much toothpaste out of the tube. Too much talk.
Thursday night I received a phone call from a source I trust pretty well, and he told me that the reported Jimbo Fisher deal would likely be going down, and that Les would be out sometime Sunday or Monday. I spent most of my Friday working under that impression, but on Saturday morning, my source was suddenly very unsure of things.
Well, we know now that that is not the case. Miles will be staying at LSU and be the head coach going forward, and Fisher is staying at Florida State.
Joe Alleva confirmed the decision after the game. ESPN's Joe Schad has been reporting that he and other administrators, but I had begun to hear it during the day of tailgating. Whether this came down to the rush of public sentiment this week and the PR nightmare that all of this became, or a simple case of Fisher turning an about face and the plan being "Jimbo or keep Les," the Hat is sticking around.
We'll break down the win later when I have a chance to give it another look, and we'll have plenty of time to discuss staff changes that are certainly coming. I don't know that there will be any extension or raises coming to try and stave off a lame-duck appearance for recruiting, or if they'll just back a flashy coordinator hire. I also don't know if there will be any administrative changes either. Frankly, I'm not sure that they ones responsible for this whole month can even BE punished.
There will be plenty of time to figure out what happens next, including LSU's bowl destination. For the time being, LSU has a coach.
