LSU's season wasn't enough to get out of the Group of Six SEC bowls where pairings are decided by the conference in consultation with ESPN. The group consists of the Music, Texas, Belk, TaxSlayer, Outback, and Liberty Bowls with no pecking order. LSU has reportedly been placed into the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium in Houston (the Texans stadium in the Astrodome parking lot) where they will face Texas Tech from the BXII on Tuesday, December 29th at 8pm CT.
With this bowl, LSU will have played an OOC opponent in the State of Texas for 5 out of the last 6 years, which while great for LSU's sizable alumni base in that state, has to be wearing thin on Louisiana residents looking for interesting travel destinations.
Texas Tech finished the year 7-5, 4-5 in conference. The Red Raiders have an extremely high octane offense, but their defense has been one of the worst in the nation. Texas Tech has already fired their co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach, cornerbacks coach, and outside linebackers coach. I'm sure LF7 is salivating at the idea of playing a team that gave up an average of 271 ypg on the ground in a conference not known for it's rushing game.
LSU is 2-0 all time vs Texas Tech, but both games were played long ago. In 1954 LSU hosted and beat a #20 ranked Red Raiders in a game where LSU allowed 0 passing yards in a 20-13 win. In 1957 LSU traveled to Lubbock and Billy Cannon had a 97 yd kickoff return for a TD in the 19-14 win.
