Friday the SEC announced media selections for the preseason all-conference teams that came out of the 2015 SEC Media Days. LSU netted eight representatives across the three squads, but just three on the first team.
A couple of notes/general gripes:
- Cyrus Jones on the first team is a complete joke in general, nevermind over Tre'davious White. The excuse cited for his poor play last season was a hip injury, which, okay, but he still struggled and I don't really get why that translates to first team (nevermind the question as to why he was playing with a hip injury). Nods like that and Kenyan Drake's third-team selection are a testament to how much Alabama media outlets (especially on radio row) really dominate the event.
- Likewise, Derek Barnett's absence from the first team is pretty farcical as well. I get that everybody's all over Carl Lawson breaking out off of his injury last season, but here's the thing -- he's still never actually had the kind of season everybody just assumes he's going to have. He had four sacks as a freshman and then missed his sophomore season. Barnett's coming off a 10-sack freshman year.
- While I appreciate all the pre-season love that Vadal Alexander is getting, and I do expect him to be very good this year (I'm told he may be THE leader of the team overall), Jerald Hawkins is LSU's best offensive lineman, and he's not even on this list. Ethan Pocic will be on it by the end of the season, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Joshua Boutte is as well.
- Couple of extremely underrated players on that third-team defense: Jarran Reed for Alabama, Davon Godchaux for LSU and Kris Frost for Auburn. Not to mention superstar-in-the-making Jamal Adams.
