And the Valley Drinks: Horny Goat Laka Laka Pineapple Hefe

It’s really hot right now. Here’s a beer that will go down easy in the heat.

When it comes to fruit flavored beers, people tend to have really strong opinions. That's always been a little odd to me in these parts, because I've never seen anybody turn down an Abita Strawberry at a crawfish boil. Maybe it's the seasonal aspect of it.

Anyways, I can't speak for the rest of the state, but it's been hotter than hell in Baton Rouge for the last week or so. And something a little sweet is always a nice way to take the edge off if you're throwing something on the grill or hopping in the pool. Sometimes you don't want the full punch of a cocktail or mixed drink, so a beer with some well-balanced fruit sweetness.

Which brings us to Horny Goat Brewing's Laka Laka Pineapple Hefe. Horny Goat is an outfit I've sampled before, and perusing their offerings they seem to be really high on the various flavors. Which works out, because they do a pretty good job on this one:

Laka Laka Pineapple Hefe

5.1% ABV     17 IBUs

A refreshing and unique take on traditional German style wheat beer.  Laka Laka has strong banana and clove notes from the yeast, a soft mouthfeel from the high wheat content in the malt bill, and pineapple juice added post-fermentation.

It has the distinct aroma of a hefeweizen, malty and sweet, but with some body. And that's what you taste on the open, with the body you'd expect from a wheat beer and a bit of that grainy texture. The sweetness of the pineapple doesn't really club you over the head; it just kind of layers itself in with the hefe flavor. If you're a hefeweizen fan, this is a pretty solid offering. It's just the right amount of sweetness to be refreshing in this weather. I give it a very solid 3.75 out of 5 stars.
