Off the football topic for a second, the Tiger basketball team will leave for their tour of Australia this week, and Johnny Jones met with the media one last time. The big news there is that point guard Josh Gray will not be making the trip, after playing in some sort of "unauthorized" game -- your guess is as good as mine as to what that might mean? Tim Quarterman will handle the point guard duties in his absence, and I'm not sure that's even a bad thing.
Over on the Ponderosa, Les Miles met with the media after LSU's first combined/full pads practice on Monday morning:
Note: Tashawn Bower still down nursing an illness, although he should be back...Arden Key worked with the first team in his place...Derrius Guice and Donte Jackson are working on kick returns with Leonard Fournette...hearing that Tre White will likely still have punt-return duties...Miles re-emphasized the quarterback competition and both Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings, which is no surprise.
Duke Riley, Debo Jones ready to progress from special teams: Advocate piece on the two former special teams standouts, neither of which want to leave that world behind completely.
Tiger Rag -- Harris Has Inside Track on the Starting Job: Echoes a lot of what we've been hearing -- to date, Brandon Harris is doing all of the things he needs to do to be LSU's starting quarterback. He took advantage of Anthony Jennings' suspension and really put his foot down to pull away. Which was exactly what the coaching staff wanted.
Also, Randy Rosetta has this feature on Trey Quinn, discussing the vision issues we previously touched on. Quinn seems to be having a positive camp so far, but man is competition tight for that third/fourth receiver spot.
Recruiting News: Georgia picks up commitment from class of 2017 Amite recruit Devonta Smith. Same thought process from me -- not ideal, but not a big deal. Long way to go for the '17 kids. Another in-state kid, Shyheim Carter of Kentwood, announces that he has decommitted from Alabama. I know LSU has been on Carter, but some have thought he was on the backburner a bit with guys like Kristian Fulton and Trayvon Mullen still on the radar. We'll see how it plays out.
In LSU-related NFL news, the Patriots have released Matt Flynn, who had been battling a hamstring injury through training camp. ESPN also has this fun feature on how Juice and ODB are still trying to one-up each other.
And of course, in something that should surprise nobody -- football sells out on season tickets for the 12th year in a row. How many of those tickets will actually get used remains the $10,000 question.
