On August 3rd, 1975, the Louisiana Superdome officially opened it's doors for the first time to the public. Less than a week later, the venue built to house the Saints held it's 1st NFL preseason game (a Saints loss, naturally.) Over the 40 years of it's operation, the Louisiana Superdome has seen the lowest lows and the highest highs of both the Saints and Tulane football, not to mention epic rock concerts, The Bayou Classic, "No Mas", multiple bowl games, Final Fours, a visit from the Pope, the horrors of Katrina, innumerable College and NFL Championship games, and Steve Gleason's blocked punt.
But The Dome (and, with the exception of the abandoned husk in Houston, it now stands alone as THE Dome) is also LSU's second home. An expansion to the far South End of campus, if you will. Just over an hour away, it's been the goal destination of multiple football and basketball seasons. A monument to the Tiger's (almost) uninterrupted dominance of Tulane football. It's where Daddy Dale packed'em in to the rafters to see Macklin and Shaq. Where Pistol Pete set NBA records. Home to LSU's 2 modern football national championship wins, and possibly the most heartbreaking and stunning loss in program history.
And let's not forget the most memorable games of all: WHUPPIN' TULANE BASEBALL IN THE WINN DIXIE CLASSIC BABY! WOOOO!
The Time Picayune has been running it's own series of "Top 40 Superdome Moments" this summer, but I put the question to y'all. What's your favorite moment in LSU's home away from home?
