In a move that wasn’t a huge surprise, Clinton, Miss., running back prospect Cam Akers committed to Florida State tonight, choosing the Seminoles over LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama and Tennessee.
Akers, the No. 2 running back prospect in the country per 247 Sports, will have a chance to step in quickly for the departing Dalvin Cook in Tallahassee. From an LSU standpoint, it’s a blow, as the Tigers and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke had really targeted the 5-11, 213-pound prospect over just about any other running back on the board. Jennings, La., tailback Travis Etienne may reportedly wind up with Akers’ spot. He’s more of a speed back, as opposed to a complete runner like Akers, but Juluke and Ed Orgeron likely figure its just best to take a shot and see what happens in Matt Canada’s new offense.
From a practical standpoint, at least with Akers going to FSU, the Tigers won’t see him unless LSU and the ‘Noles match up in the postseason.
