Again...silly season...worse than recruiting.
So this is what I woke up to:
BREAKING: Houston has decided on Lane Kiffin, president to OK the hire at a Thursday meeting, @USATODAY has learned https://t.co/DhTeueFIU5
— Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) December 8, 2016
...followed by...
Sources at Houston say that no head coaching hire has been approved yet. Deliberation is still ongoing regarding multiple candidates.

USAToday reporting Houston's set to hire Lane Kiffin.. UH source told FoxSports no decision's been made & no offer's been extended to anyone
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) December 8, 2016
and...
— Hunter Yurachek (@HunterYurachek) December 8, 2016
Now, for me, I’m going with Godfrey and Bruce Feldman over Dan Wolken (Mr. Yurachek has a nice sense of humor), but the consensus is that there should be a decision regarding Lane Kiffin and the University of Houston soon...ish.
Which...falls in line with what I said yesterday, more or less.
Like any coaching search, things can and will change at any time — maybe even by the time this publishes. I believe that Lane Kiffin will either be the next head coach of Houston (or maybe South Florida), or the next offensive coordinator of LSU. From the Houston perspective, I’m going to guess this is a dispute between power-brokers that really want Kiffin and others that are worried about how quickly he’ll stick around.
Again, LSU is not in a position where it feels like it has to make this hire right now today. If they were, they would have already moved on to their next candidate.
As for whom is next on the list, sources on Skip Bertman Drive are still being VERY tight-lipped. I was told yesterday that Mark Helfrich is NOT the next guy up...does that mean there’s no interest at all? I have no idea. Ditto for Steve Sarkisian, Tee Martin, Matt Canada, Sterlin Gilbert, Chip Lindsey, Keith Heckendorf, Todd Monken (still my first choice), Major Applewhite and on and on down the line.
We will stay on top of things as they develop.
