Clutch hitting failed the Tigers Monday night, as LSU scored just six runs on 15 hits in a 10-16 loss to Rice in game six of the Baton Rouge Regional. The two teams will square off in game seven tonight, with the winner moving on to face either NC State or Coastal Carolina, which sits in a rain delay.
The Tigers left 12 runners on base, leaving them loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings. Owl closer Glenn Otto in particular was able to handcuff Tiger hitters in the final 4.1 innings, while Rice broke open a 4-4 tie with three runs each in the fifth and seventh innings. Riley Smith took the loss allowing three runs on three hits over 2.1 IP.
The loss puts LSU in a precarious position after using seven pitchers over the course of the game. Today's starter remains a mystery, although per Paul Maineri, Jared Poche could be a possibility. None of the Tiger arms through more than 34 pitches, but Austin Bain for sure will be unavailable after taking a scary liner off the head on a comeback in the eighth. Jake Latz and Russell Reynolds each only threw an inning on Friday night.
