WEEKEND OBLONG SPHEROID REPORT - 7/21/16

A great variety of football-like substances will hit the airwaves this weekend as the long slog through the desert of July continues. A full slate of CFL this weekend, though they are taking Sunday off. Ottawa remains the only unbeaten team north of the border in this still early season and that’s not likely to change this weekend against win-less Saskatchewan. Sanzar Super Rugby, whose truly global professional sports league spans from South Africa to Japan, enters the quarterfinals round of it’s World Championship tournament. We’ve also got the usual handful of NRL Rugby and awesome Aussie Rules football on Fox Sports.

We’ve also got something unique this weekend. ESPN3 is carrying the championship game of the Women’s Football Alliance. Started in 2009, the WFA is a professional tackle football league for women that has grown to 45 teams in 3 divisions of competitive play. The Acadiana Zydeco, whose home field is Teurlings Catholic High School in Lafayette, are playing for the Division 3 championship against Richmond on Friday. The championship game for Division 1, dubbed W Bowl I, will be on ESPN3 on Saturday between the Dallas Elite and the (Washington) DC Divas.
