Reports: Tulane Hires Vandy’s Jewett; Cannizaro Staying

Green Wave baseball hired another program’s top assistant instead of LSU’s.

Late in the evening on Friday, a buddy of mine who is connected down at Tulane informed me that UC-Santa Barbara head coach Andrew Checketts had turned down an offer to take the Tulane baseball job. He expected LSU hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Andy Cannizaro to be the choice.

But Green Wave athletic director Troy Dannen went in a different direction and decided to offer the job to Vanderbilt assistant Travis Jewett, who has reportedly accepted the job.

This is some very good news for LSU, as Cannizaro has done some top-shelf work both as a hitting coach and recruiting coordinator since arriving before the 2015 season. It’s a very surprising move for Tulane, given that both Cannizaro and Southeastern Louisiana head coach Matt Riser were both team captains for the Green Wave under Rick Jones. Gutsy move for Troy Dannen, although Jewett’s record as an assistant is pretty impressive in its own right.
