Official invites for the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine have gone out, and 10 Tigers will have a chance to interview, work-out and go through physicals for the league’s 32 teams in Indianapolis the first week in March.
Per a release, LSU’s total is second behind Alabama, which had 12 players invited. Leonard Fournette, Jamal Adams, Malachi Dupre, Travin Dural, Ethan Pocic, Kendell Beckwith, Tre’davious White, Davon Godchaux, Duke Riley and Tashawn Bower all made the cut, which is based on a certain percentage of NFL teams requesting them.
Most of those names are chalk, but Bower is a nice surprise, as The Advocate detailed yesterday:
“I figured I’d be on the last tier of invites. Getting the invite itself, I was like, ‘Oh, I can’t believe it!’ ” he said. “It’s something that, as a kid, you dream about. I was happy, humbled and grateful for the invite. What I do there will help or hurt me. It gives me another opportunity to talk to teams and show them my football knowledge and perform in their drills.”
He adjusted well to the outside linebacker role in Dave Aranda’s 3-4 down the stretch and played his best ball in LSU’s last two games against Texas A&M and Louisville, so good on Bower after something of an up-and-down career here.
For players like Fournette, Adams and White — and Beckwith, who is still recovering from his knee injury in November — the Combine is mostly about the physical and the interviews as opposed to working out, but players like Dural, Dupre and Riley will all have a shot to make an impression on the practice field. The 40 in particular will be huge for Dural and Riley, who will both need to show the speed elements of their respective games.
The NFL Combine will run from Feb. 28 through March 6, and will be televised on NFL Network.
