GAMETHREAD: Lamar (22-15) @ LSU (25-12), 6:30 p.m., SECN+

LSU welcomes former assistant head coach Will Davis back to Baton Rouge.

This isn’t the first time I’ll write this sentence this season and it’s not the last:

Tonight, the LSU Tigers face a team coached by a coach whose last job was assistant at LSU.

David is a homegrown boy, a Lee High alum who played for LSU between 2004-07 and was an assistant for the Tigers between 2007 and 2015. He spent last season as a coach in waiting assistant for Jim Gilligan and assumed head coach duties before the season.

Last year his Cardinals nabbed a 12-11 midweek season opening victory after LSU was ahead 8-0 LSU still leads the all-time series 6-5. Lamar’s victory snapped a five game LSU winning streak over the Cardinals.

Lamar responded by dropping a series to Blake Dean’s New Orleans team by sweeping Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Grambling to improve to 22-15 overall.

Starters

Lamar: Ryan Johnson (1.35 ERA, 6.2 IP, .571 K/BB [4/7])

LSU: Caleb Gilbert (3.22 ERA, 22.1 IP, 7.25 K/BB [29/4])
