Tigers top Northwestern State 5-2

Win snaps three-game losing streak

Emilie Bowen/LSU

The Tiger offense took a while to get going but eventually broke through as the Tigers beat the Demons 5-2.

LSU was held without a hit through the first two innings of Tuesday’s game. The Tigers first hit in the game also resulted in the first run of the game, as Emily Griggs’ double scored Sydney Springfield in the third inning. A bases-loaded walk by Amanda Doyle later in the inning would plate the Tigers second run. Bailey Landry would score two more on a double in the fourth. LSU’s final run came in the sixth when Sahvanna Jaquish singled in Connie Quinn.

Beth Torina again deployed a lineup atypical from the one seen for most of the year. It appears that Quinn will be the third hitter until further notice. Jaquish hit fourth and played third while Taylor Satchell was behind the plate and hit out of the six spot.

On the pitching end, Sydney Smith was dominant all night. She initially went five shutout innings and was pulled for Maribeth Gorsuch at the start of the sixth. Gorsuch would labor through the sixth inning, only recording two outs and allowing two runs to score, only one was earned. Torina would re-insert Smith later in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Smith would induce a ground out and then close out the game in the seventh. In total, Smith pitched 6.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out five.

It’s till concerning that LSU was this slow out of the gate in a midweek team, but the offense ultimately showed up and snapped the losing streak which, for now, is a start. Up next is three games against Tennessee in Tiger Park.
