Meatball struck again last night, landing a commit from Dallas, TX edge player Jarell Cherry. The 6’3”, 224-pounder is a top-200 prospect nationally and the 13th commit to the 2018 signing class. Here’s a quick highlight video:
Not a ton of advanced technique here. Cherry plays out of position as an interior DL on a lot of snaps, probably to get a faster line to the QB. What stands out is he is a total speed merchant. So much so, they spliced in track highlights to illustrate his ability to run.
Make no mistake, Cherry won’t be lining up on the inside for any extended period of time at the next level. He’s a pure edge rusher with a long, lean frame. He’s the type of player you hope can be the heir apparent to Arden Key and K’lavon Chaisson down the road. He does play with solid leverage and obviously his get off stands out, which gives him the makings of a strong pass rusher.
Cherry joins Davin Cotton, Travez Moore and and Nelson Jenkins in what looks to be a strong DL class for 2018. We’re still months away from taking the football field, but the off-field part of Orgeron’s job is off to a hot start.
