Etling was the resounding favorite to win the competition with freshmen Myles Brennan and Lowell Narcisse and sophomore Justin McMillan, but the youngsters, particularly Brennan, made it a game effort, per Orgeron.

LSU has wrapped up training camp and has begun working on the gameplan for the season opener against BYU next week in Houston. Etling, a transfer from Purdue in 2015, started the final 10 games for LSU last season. He is the team’s fifth different season-opening starter in the last seven seasons. He is also the first senior starter for a season opener since Zach Mettenberger in 2013.
