The 2020-2021 LSU women’s basketball season starts in 10 days and now that schedules have finally been announced, preseason accolades and predictions for the SEC are rolling in.
The conference’s head coaches selected LSU’s senior guard Khalya Pointer to the preseason All-SEC first-team. She is accompanied by Arkansas’ Chelsea Dungee, Auburn’s Unique Thompson, Kentucky’s Rhyne Howard, Mississippi State’s Rickea Jackson, South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston, Tennessee’s Rennia Davis, and Texas A&M’s N’Dea Jones. Howard was also picked as the preseason conference player of the year.
Pointer finished the COVID-shortened 2020 season in the top-10 in scoring (14.8 points per game), assists (4.7) and steals (2.1). Pointer is LSU’s leading returning scorer and ought to cross the 1,000 career point threshold; she also has a chance to finish in the top-10 for career steals in LSU history and is 14th in career assists.
In addition to the all-conference teams, the 14 head coaches picked their order of finish and Nikki Fargas’ group was picked seventh. South Carolina, who opens the year ranked No. 1 nationally, was picked to finish atop the SEC standings. The rest of the projected standings are as follows.
- South Carolina
- Texas A&M
- Mississippi State
- Ole Miss
LSU’s season begins next Friday against BYU in the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas.
