Monday brought some welcome news for the LSU football program, as sophomore place kicker Cade York and AARP member Zach Von Rosenberg were named semifinalists for the Lou Groza and Ray Guy Awards.
Von Rosenberg has been the Ray Guy Punter of the Week, against Mississippi State and Arkansas. For the year Von Rosenberg is averaging 44 yards per punt. He has had 20 punts downed inside the 20, and he’s also had 13 different punts go for 50 or more yards. Von Rosenberg is one of 16 semifinalists, the three finalists will be announced on December 22 and the winner will be announced on the College Football Award Show, on January 7.
York is one of 20 semifinalists. He’s had a strong sophomore season, hitting on 11-14 kicks and making four beyond 50 yards. York is also a perfect 27-27 on PATs this season. For his career York has successfully kicked 32 of 41 field goals and 116 of 120 extra points. Like the Ray Guy Award, the three finalists for the Lou Groza will be announced on December 22 and the winner will be honored on January 7.
The Groza Award is given to the nation’s best place kicker; the Ray Guy is given to the nation’s best punter. LSU, amazingly has never won either award though everyone on this here website knows Brad Wing won the Ray Guy in 2011 and Cole Tracy won the Groza Award in 2018. Don’t let the lamestream fake news media tell you otherwise.
