LSU pulls off the upset in Baton Rouge

NCAA Womens Basketball: SEC Conference Tournament-Louisiana State vs Mississippi State Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The LSU women’s basketball team picked up by far and away its biggest win of the 2020-2021 season Thursday evening, upsetting the previously undefeated Texas A&M Aggies 65-61 in overtime.

The win snaps a two-game losing skid and moves LSU to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in SEC play.

LSU held Texas A&M to a season-worst 26 points in the first half. The Tigers went into the break up 34-26, highlighted by a 26-7 run at the close of the first quarter through the opening of the second.

But LSU’s lead wouldn’t hold, in fact it was surrendered with 49 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Fifth-year senior Faustine Aifuwa tied the game with five seconds to play on a jumper in the paint set up by Khayla Pointer. Pointer finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. She moved past Rhonda Hawthorne for eighth in assists in program history with 394.

The star of LSU’s upset win was sophomore guard Tiara Young, who led all players with a career-best 20 points in 30 minutes off the bench.

“We had players that we have been counting on in the last four games and I thought the play of Tiara Young was huge for us,” Nikki Fargas said afterwards. “She showcased why she’s going to become one of the best players in our league.”

The women’s basketball team has the weekend off, and will next be on the floor Monday evening against Missouri.
